The police are proceeding with traffic regulations on the roads of the Prefecture of Attica through a relevant announcement due to the emergency report of dangerous weather phenomena. In particular, according to the relevant announcement, it is noted that:

For special safety reasons and to avoid causing traffic problems in the face of adverse weather conditions, from 22:00 today 12-27-2024 until 16:00 on Saturday 12-28-2024:

  • the circulation of any kind of heavy vehicle with a maximum permissible weight of more than 3.5 tons will not be allowed, regardless of the use of anti-skid chains:
  • In both traffic streams N.E.O. Athens-Lamiain its section from the height of A/K Kalyftakis to h/th 57,300 (boundaries of N. Attica).
  • In both traffic streams P.E.O Elefsina-Thebes from h/th 5,000 (REVOIL gas station – formerly CYCLON) to the limits of N. Attica with N. Boeotia (m/th 30,000).

From the above prohibition are excluded the following vehicles:

  • roadside assistance vehicles,
  • Trucks carrying salt,
  • Emergency vehicles.
  • there will be a temporary and complete stop to the traffic of all vehicles, for the purpose of installing road markings, in the left lane of N.E.O. Athens-Lamia, as follows:
  • From h/th 18,000 to h/th 20,000 in the traffic flow towards Lamia and
  • From highway 57,000 to highway 55,500 in the traffic flow towards Athens.

The above traffic arrangements may be extended or reduced beyond the specified hours, as long as the traffic conditions dictate it.

Additional, from 22:00 today 12-27-2024 and until further notice, for the entire road network of the Prefecture of Attica, it is mandatory to equip cars of all categories with anti-skid chains, or other similar anti-skid means, as long as these vehicles are not they carry special tires.

The drivers of the vehicles in question are requested to avoid driving on the above road sections in order to avoid inconvenience and the creation of additional traffic problems and to follow the instructions of the traffic controllers.

Nea Odos: Recommendations for drivers in view of severe weather conditions

Nea Odos earlier informed the drivers that, according to the Emergency Weather Deterioration Bulletin of the National Meteorological Service, valid from today Friday 27/12 until tomorrow Saturday 28/12, a worsening of the weather is expected with the main characteristic of dense snowfall in the mountains and semi-mountains of Evia and Attica (Saturday morning hours), as well as in the East You’re solid.

Nea Odos emphasizes that it has taken all the necessary measures to manage the phenomena. It recommends the following to drivers who are going to travel:

  • To be informed before starting their journey about the weather and traffic conditions, by calling the company’s Customer Service.

Those drivers interested in the ATHE highway section (Metamorfosi Attikis – Skarfeia Fthiotidas) can call 22950 26900. Those drivers interested in the Ionian Road (Antirrio – Ioannina) can call 2641 306 306 (everyday and Saturday from 08: 00 to 20:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 18:00).

  • If necessary, change their schedule to avoid peak weather conditions.
  • Have anti-skid chains on their vehicle and know how to install them.
  • Have a sufficient amount of fuel in the tank of their vehicle.
  • To faithfully follow the instructions of the Traffic.
  • In case of emergency call 1075.

Regarding anti-skid chains, please note:

  • The chains are placed on the drive wheels.
  • The speed with the use of anti-skid chains must not exceed 30 km/h.
  • Chains are correctly positioned when pointing and taut.
  • We point out that driving and stopping in the Emergency Lane (LEA) is dangerous for the driver and his vehicle. The LEA should only be used in emergency situations.

Prohibition of heavy vehicle traffic on the Athens-Thessaloniki highway and anti-skid chains

By decision of the Thessaloniki Traffic Directorate, the circulation of any type of heavy vehicle with a maximum permissible weight of more than 3.5 tons is prohibited, regardless of the use of anti-skid chains or other means, for special safety reasons in order to avoid causing traffic problems and due to adverse weather conditions, in the current direction from Thessaloniki to Athens on the road axis of the PATHE highway, from X.Th. 484+00 (Malgaron Toll Road) to X.Th. 474+00 (Kleidi Junction, from 10 tonight until tomorrow at 4 pm.

Excluded from these traffic regulations are:

– emergency vehicles (E.K.A.B., P.Y., etc.)

– roadside assistance vehicles

– vehicles transporting salt

– vehicles heading from Kliidi junction to Egnatia road (Veroia, Kozani, etc.)

Besides, by decision of the Pieria Police Directorate, from tonight at 10 pm until tomorrow, December 28 at 4 pm, the traffic on the Athens-Thessaloniki national road, from kilometer 471 (limits with Thessaloniki Traffic Authority) to kilometer 400 (limits with Larissa Police address), heading towards Athens, the traffic of any type of heavy vehicle with a maximum permitted weight of more than 3.5 tons, regardless of use anti-slip chains, for special safety reasons in order to avoid traffic problems but also due to adverse weather conditions. Roadside assistance vehicles, salt trucks and emergency vehicles are exempt from the curfew.

Also, according to the decisions of the Kilkis, Pieria and Serres Police Departments, with the aim of smooth and safe road traffic as well as the prevention of traffic accidents, it is mandatory to equip all vehicles with anti-skid chains or other similar anti-skid means (unless carry special tires), for the entire road network of the Regional Units of Kilkis and Pieria, as well as in the mountainous and semi-mountainous road network of the Regional Unit of Serres. Accordingly, the same applies to the entire road network of the Regional Units of Imathia, Pella and Halkidiki, according to the decisions of the Police Departments of Imathia, Pella and Halkidiki.

Further worsening of the weather from tomorrow

It is recalled that from today Friday (27.12.2024) the rainfall and snowfall will weaken in most areas, but tomorrow Saturday (28.12.2024) fair weather is expectedthe rise of phenomenathroughout eastern Greece.

In detail:

  1. Her Friday (27.12) in Crete there will be strong rains and storms in places and snowfalls in the mountains. In places, heavy snowfall is predicted in eastern Macedonia and Thrace from early evening in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas and at night and in areas with lower altitude (indicatively from 200 meters and above). Stormy northeast winds will blow in the Aegean, in eastern and southern Evia, eastern Attica and in places in the eastern Peloponnese (8 to 9 and from the afternoon 8 Beaufort).
  2. On Saturday (28.12) heavy rains and storms are predicted in the central and southern Aegean, the Sporades (in the morning hours), Evia (until noon), the Cyclades, the islands of the eastern Aegean, in places in Crete and from the afternoon in the Dodecanese .

Snowfalls will be noted in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of the continental body, the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of Evia, Attica (in the morning hours), the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean, the northern Cyclades and Crete. The snowfall will be heavy, until the morning hours in eastern Macedonia and Thrace and in the morning hours in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of Evia and eastern Sterea.

Stormy northeasterly winds will blow in the Aegean (8 and locally 9 Beaufort).
