One million passengers and visitors used the Thessaloniki metro in its first month of operation, the traffic in the market, in the center, increased by 30% and cars decreased by 15% who daily enter the city.
The above figures show the positive effects of the operation of the Metro, as pointed out by the Deputy Minister of the Interior (Macedonia and Thrace) Kostas Giulekasimmediately after the extended meeting of the Coordinating Council to reduce the inconvenience caused by the construction of the fly over road.
According to the data reported at the meeting, the Metro is mainly used by young people, most traffic is from noon onwards, while a normalization of traffic was observed on main arteries and on the ring road of Thessaloniki, which is also related to the operation of the Metro.
At the meeting, it was discussed how the first conclusions from the operation of the Metro will be used in any redesign of the measures that have been taken so far.
Mr. Giulekas emphasized that in addition to the 400-space parking lot that the Municipality of Thessaloniki will create near the New Switzerland terminal, proposals for the creation of other parking spaces are being considered. The creation of new photo-unloading positions for goods is still being considered, alongside the strict surveillance of those already operating.
At the same time, OSETH is preparing the new transportation map of Thessaloniki, based on the new data created by the Metro.
