Within the first months of 2025, among other things, a contract will be signed for the supply and installation throughout the country of seven weather radar networks
According to Civil Protection sources, in the first months of 2025, among other things, a contract will be signed for the supply and installation of seven meteorological radar networks throughout the country, which will also have the necessary infrastructure. The new weather stations and radars come to cover a gap that has existed for more than 20 years in the country, as the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, B. Kikilias. The purpose of these actions is to upgrade prevention and early preparation for extreme weather events.
With the supply of meteorological stations for the early warning of natural disasters as well as emergency communication stations and provision of climatic data of areas of interest, projects amounting to over 36 million. euros, the aim is to improve the capture of current weather conditions and, above all, the quality of the forecasts produced both for the installation area and for the entire territory, promoting the levels of prediction and security.
In particular, the fixed meteorological Radars are planned to be installed in new as well as in existing operating positions of the EMY meteorological Radar network. Specifically, according to information, among the areas expected to be settled are Kavala, Thessaloniki, Preveza, Andravida, while areas such as Skyros, Larissa, Aegina, Ymittos, Chania, Kalamata and Kythera.
At the same time, within the framework of the AEGIS program, as it became known from Civil Protection circles, the supply of a short-term forecasting system (Nowcasting) with the necessary software and equipment (servers, etc.) is expected to be signed, as well as a system for the production of automated updates and warnings, which will be installed in EMY and in the Regional Meteorological Center of Larissa as backup.
Furthermore, the contract to be signed – estimated within the first two months of 2025 – also includes the expansion of the National Meteorological Station Network (EMMS) of EMY with the supply, installation and operation of a network of a total of 30 Hydrological Automatic Meteorological Station systems, the installation and network operation of a total of 12 Atmospheric Electrical Discharge detection systems, the installation and operation of two systems for receiving and processing data from meteorological satellites as well as the general upgrade of the central infrastructure of equipment and software for the production and availability of critical data in the existing EMY system.
