A family from Volos with a bakery business found itself… without euros when a ring of fraudsters from Lithuania “hacked” the accounts, according to gegonota.news.
According to the publication, fraudsters called the businessman last Saturday at noon impersonating bank employees, to inform him that he must insure his accounts.
A woman who spoke Greek introduced herself to him as a bank employee and informed him that his account had been hacked and asked for a security procedure with the introduction of new codes.
The call was made from the phone number 2109555000 which actually belongs to the bank and the businessman dealing with it did not think for a moment that it was a scam and that malware might have been installed in the bank and specifically in its call center. The fraudulent “bank employees” “informed” him that online fraud was in progress and that he had to secure his accounts, and the professional entered new codes, resulting in the money flying.
The bank is also being investigated as to whether fraudsters installed malware on its systems as the businessman believed that the fraudsters were indeed bank employees since they used the bank’s phone number. The businessmen filed an anonymous lawsuit and Interpol’s assistance was reportedly requested to track down the ring.
