Researchers, according to the Daily Mail, have found that sharks can be just as dangerous to their partners after a chilling video shows males inflicting horrific injuries on females, grabbing them with their teeth while they try to mate.
The clichéd phrase “love hurts” comes to describe the reality of the sexual life of these predators characterized by unprecedented violence.
As the experts explain, in order to mate, sharks must press their bellies while the male penetrates the female.
This is a fairly simple process for smaller, more agile species.
However, larger sharks often struggle to get comfortable in this position and will violently bite the female’s fins or gills to hold her in place, causing her deep cuts.
