White sandy beaches with towering palm trees and crystal turquoise warm waters with coral reefs make up a unique setting, especially for diving enthusiasts and those who love the marine element. Among them, of course, the …mermaids.

At the end of January, with the thermometer showing over 30 degrees in the distant Maldives, the Thessaloniki “mermaid”, Chariklia Mari, dived into the deep blue waters of the Indian Ocean and swam with sharks and huge stingrays.

The young owner of the first Mermaid Academy in Greece (Thessaloniki Mermaid Academy) visited the exotic destination, explored the tropical seabed of the area, “introduced” the Thessaloniki mermaids to the exotic area, and it is possible that the Maldives mermaids will also visit Thessaloniki.

As he notes, the feeling of swimming with sharks and all kinds of marine life is indescribable.

For those who wonder if this was dangerous and if anyone who dares feels panic or fear, the mermaid trainer notes that calmness and respect towards these creatures, especially when entering their environment, are the key elements to avoid causing any harm. bad feeling.

“I wasn’t scared at all”

“From the surface we could see the fins of the sharks or as they call them here the “cats of the sea” and the crew informed us that it was time to swim with them. As we learn at PADI, as humans we are not allowed to touch marine life and the locals advised us the same. “If they touch you, stay calm, they are just exploring you,” says Hariklia Mari to the Athenian/Macedonian News Agency, talking about this special experience.

“I was initially deeply moved as soon as I saw the sharks underwater. First we swam with them with the masks and then it was time to take pictures with our tails. I felt even better swimming with the mermaid’s tail, which for me is now a part of me”, he says and adds that he was not scared even for a moment, which is also evident from the photos. Dozens of sharks can be seen around her and so close to her, that they look like … fakes and while the skeptics would say that it is a photomontage, the shots are completely real.

“I wasn’t scared at all and to be honest I couldn’t wait to get in the water. In fact, I was the last one to come out of the sea! What was fantastic is that the sharks were very few in some others, but when it was my turn more came and I believe this is due to the energy we emit as mermaids, since they probably realized that I wanted them near me”, says Ms. Marie.

In addition, he notes that he “saw everything” under water, since the visibility is much better than in Greece and the wonderful waters in many parts of our country, not because they are more beautiful or cleaner, but because there is less salt in the water there than in our own seas.

The journey of Hariklia Mari who trains mermaids and gives lessons in Thessaloniki and Athens with women and men wearing tails and learning to swim with a monopedal, was carried out with the aim of highlighting Mermaiding and creating material for the actions of the academy and others mermaid schools of Europe.

“This is how we will highlight our actions for 2025 in the best possible way,” says the Thessaloniki mermaid and prepares suitcases that will hold her colorful impressive tails for the next destination to meet other sea creatures.
