Brown bears have their home in Nymphaeum, Florina – about a half hour away from the capital of the county, in a specially fenced area

In the Fairytale Nymphaeum, Florina, about a half hour away from the capital of the county, in a specially fenced area of 50 acres and at an altitude of 1,350 meters is the refuge of the brown bear. This refuge belongs to Arcturos, a Greek non -governmental and non -profit ecological organization, set up in 1992 to protect wildlife and the natural environment.
Since then, its members have been doing great work. They conduct field research actions, scientific studies, and are struggling to raise public awareness through environmental education and volunteering. There are currently a total of 20 bears, which visitors can see from a relatively close distance during the tour.
In the refuge, you will be informed, inter alia, of the changes in the behavior and lifestyle of the bear per season, the morphological and biological characteristics of the animal, the food habits, its reproduction, the birth and training of its young Horn and other interesting elements of the environment in which it lives and operates. In the heart of the Nymphaeum, in the historic building of the winning school, you will find the brown bear information center, which is aimed at young and old alike, and has various themes that one can deepen, depending on the level of knowledge. It is important to know that the bear’s refuge is closed from early January to early March, as it is the winter sleep season.
In Nymphaeum, however, in addition to the coffee bearing shelter, there is also the Lykos and Lyga Protection Center. The animals currently there (wolves, lynxes, jackals) were former prisoners, from zoos, or by individuals who had illegally, through smuggling. Wild animals such as those who have grown up in a captivity condition, have not developed the instinct of survival, so if they are released, they will not be able to survive. That is why they are in the shelter. If you are in the area you will see the grandeur of nature and wildlife, and you will have the opportunity to browse the scenic straits of the Nymphaeum, with the beautiful mansions, which has been voted on as one of Europe’s ten most beautiful villages, according to UNESCO. After all, the picture speaks for itself.
