The inability of the Ukrainians to reinforce their defenses with further weapons systems from the arsenal of the Greek Armed Forces (EDF) was transported through safe channels to Kyiv. According to well-informed sources, Athens was fired upon by the Ukrainian side regarding the possibility of sending anti-aircraft systems old Soviet technology, without however making a formal request. Specifically, the possibility of sending some of the TOR-M1 or OSA-AK short-range anti-aircraft systems available to the Air Force (PA) and the Army (SS), respectively, was discussed from the Ukrainian side.
Although the specifics systems face serious issues as they need to be upgraded in order to remain operational (TOR-M1 joined the arsenal in 2001 and OSA-AK in 1992) and under the current circumstances this becomes rather prohibitive, they still serve some of the country’s air defense needs, as therefore their export is rather ruled out. It is noted that at the same time from competent sources in Athens it is noted that, at least for the time being, there is no question of sending the S-300 missiles of the PA. which are stored in Crete. In general, after the initial Kalashnikov and launcher missions, Athens follows the wider EU line. to focus on the need for a diplomatic solution.
