Due to the increased seismic activity, the Tsunami National Center, installed a tidalist in a fishing shelter
A tidalist installed the Tsunami National Center (ECB) of the Geodetic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens (YAA) on the northeast coast of Santorini.
As stated in a related announcement, following the increased seismic activity recorded in the last week between Santorini and Amorgos, the National Tsunam Warning CenterI, of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, took action by installing a tidalist in a small fishing shelter on the northeast coast of Santorini.
He also handed the authorities to the authorities about the operation of the ECB, as well as general instructions with self -protection measures for the risk of tsunami.
The announcement emphasizes that the selection of this site, which is at the closest possible point from the outbreak of the ongoing seismic activity, is primarily aimed at the timely recording and overview of changes in sea levels.
With the addition of this station, the network of tidalists implementing the ECB from 2013 is further thickened, counting currently 16 stations. According to the announcement by the National Observatory of Athens, the first Santorini YSA was installed in Santorini in 2013, but at the end of 2017 its operation was interrupted due to accumulated failures from continuous exposure to extreme weather conditions, which made it unreliable for it. Measurements.
The installation was in consultation with the Deputy Mayor of Civil Protection of the Municipality of Thira, Jacob Lignos and the President of the Municipal Port Authority of Thira, George Nomikos. For the installation work, he went to the field of Geodynamic Institute consisting of Dr. Nikos Kalligeris, main researcher YAA and Stelios Polymenakos, Electrical Engineer NTUA, External Associate of the YSA, while for the integration of the station in the operational center, electrical engineer, External Associate of YAA/EAA, Stratos Liadopoulos. Equally important was the voluntary assistance provided by residents of the local community during the installation.
As part of the commitment to further enhance the monitoring and prevention of the risk of tsunami in the Greek area and the Eastern Mediterranean, the gradual installation of 30 new stations is planned in the period 2025-2026 with funding from the NAA-AEGIS Central Program of the NSA and The “Civil Protection” program 2021-2027. “This initiative confirms the continued effort of the Tsunami National Center and the Geodynamic Institute for Citizens’ Protection, utilizing their infrastructure to detect and address the risks associated with seismic activity and tsunami“, The National Observatory of Athens points out in its announcement.
