The ability to extend this action to families that have left other islands such as Anafi, Amorgos, Ios is also examined.
Special psychosocial support program for children and families of Santorini is implemented by the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family, with the decisive assistance of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and in collaboration with the Municipality of Santorini.
The Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Sofia Zacharakihe was on the island and together with the experts of the Interdisciplinary Risk and Crisis Management Committee of the NCSR, which has been set up at the initiative of the Rector, Professor Maki Siassou, had a meeting with Mayor Nikos Zorzos.
The action aims to manage its vulnerability of children affected by persistent seismic activity, through specially designed activities that promote the creation of safe spaces. The program includes weekly sessions for a month, giving children and their carers the opportunity to manage the challenges of their daily lives through creative expression and group activities.
Mrs Zacharakis, after the meeting, stated that “It is a systematic action in which they come, meet and cooperate for the same purpose, the Ministry, the Municipality and the EKPA. Every Tuesday and Wednesday will be on the island an interdisciplinary team, with special educators, special psychologists who talk to children and children will be able to explain how they feel and express their feelings. This will help families. We also consider the opportunity to extend this action to also to families who have left but also to the other islands such as Anafi, Amorgos, Ios ». At the same time, he thanked the EKPA and the Municipality of Santorini for the cooperation.
The actions are based on the power of art -the theater, the music, the narrative and the Dance- offering children and their carers a valuable tool of psychosocial empowerment. The program is designed by the Postgraduate Program “Global Health – Medicine of Disaster” of the Nursing School of Medicine and has been adopted as optimum practice by the Amna International Organization, which specializes in Children’s Trauma Management and is implemented with the support of the School Psychology Laboratory Department of Psychology, EKPA.
