The three potential scenarios of the evolution of seismic activity in Santorini were analyzed by seismology professor Costas Synolakis in Parliament.
In informing the members of the Special Standing Environmental Protection Committee, the academic stressed that the first and most likely scenario is to stop the seismic activity, as well as in the last period when something similar happened in 2011 – 2012.
The second scenario is to have a larger earthquake but not until this time scientists can determine its size and the focus. The third scenario, according to Mr. Synolakis, is to have an explosion of the volcano as it was in 1939, 1941 and 1950 or to have an underwater explosion in Columbus.
He added that Columbus would be more alarming than the third scenario.
“We’re really in uncharted waters, we don’t know what’s going on. We have been studying Santorini for about 100 years, the life of volcanoes has been tens of thousands of years, ”he said.
Referring to the way of building in Santorini, he stressed that the old houses are built of uncooked bricks, derived from hunting materials, which makes them uninvited earthquakes.
“These are the houses should be controlled very carefully,” he added.
