The “Red Tower” that belongs- ownership- to a group of institutions has been left to wear for decade, while occasionally the municipal services after pressure is cleaning up within the surroundings without naturally being obliged, since it is a private space.

The last time the municipality recruited its services and cleaned the area was in April 2024 and almost a year after the image of the damaged and the fire that had erupted in June 2017 is again heartbreaking.

Garbage thrown at each point while dozens of drivers illegally decided to turn the area into a lasting parking lot, indifferent to the static of the building and the dangers that may be for themselves and their vehicles. The surrounding space is literally a dry point while a sign at the entrance of the tower warns of the risk of collapse of the building.

Talking to thestival.gr The Deputy Mayor of Urban Development and Town Planning, Mr. Dimitra Agathidou, first of all, stressed that the building is a private space and belongs to a group of institutions while one of them has the highest proportion of ownership.

“Institutions must take action and all these years had to have done so. They were given them as a donation and had to maintain it and have it in a good condition. Now either because of the weakness or the disagreement (among the institutions), I do not know why, the building and the surrounding area have reached the point where it is today, ”said Mrs Agathidou.

He pointed out that the Foundation, which has the largest percentage of the “Red Pyrgos” ownership, has recently shown interest as “it has addressed the municipality of Thessaloniki to make the fence” but as it is foreseen by the law “it should first obtain approval from the Ephorate of Modern Monuments”.

In the approval of Ephorate of Modern Monuments As explained by Mrs Agathidou, the limit of the surroundings will be described because the space is preserved as a preserved beyond the building.

“So the approval will indicate who the surrounding area is, it will be approved by the topographic which will then bring it to the Town Planning to get permission to fence,” Ms Agathidou said.

Until the institutions receive approvals and licenses from the authorities responsible for the enclosure of the site, the image of the “Red Tower” will be similar to a landfill as the municipal cleaning services are not obliged to enter private spaces and clearly their obligations to public space.

The “Red Tower” was built in the late 19th century by Dimitris Ioannides-Tsakridis to prove to a woman, the happiness of the love she had, paid as she is said to build 140,000 gross. Thus, the tower became known as “Chateau Mon Bonheur”, that is, “The Tower of My Happiness”.
