The 23 defendants, prosecuted for heavy offenses, appear to have participated in 3 circuits, two Serres -based and one based in Thessaloniki
The majority of restrictive terms were released, after their apology to the Serres investigator, 8 of the 9 arrested in the antiquity case who were resolved by police officers of the Organized Crime of Northern Greece in ELAS. The latter will apologize tomorrow, while at the same time the other 14 arrested for the same case were reported to apologize to the Third Special Investigator of Thessaloniki, in which the first four were explained today and received the same criminal treatment (released). The process in Thessaloniki will continue tomorrow and will be completed on Wednesday, when the threshold of the investigator’s office will pass a 63 -year -old, one of the “protagonists” of the case and marked for similar offenses.
The 23 defendants, who are prosecuted for heavy offenses and among them for criminal organization, embezzlement of monuments, illegal exporting of cultural goods, illegal excavation and archaeological research, acceptance and disposition of monuments, appear to have participated in three circuits, two with the headquarters. According to the case file, illegal excavations in various archaeological sites, including in Tombos Casta and in the wider Amphipolis area.
Among the 8 defendants who were invited to explain to the Serres investigator is an employee of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Serres, who allegedly guided the criminal group whose accused of being a “leading” member, in targeted investigations and excavations. This defendant (released by banning exit and appearance in a police station) in his apology allegedly accepted that he was involved (privately) in investigations to identify pounds and lost treasures (“goldsmiths”), a position that most of them appear to have been expressed by most of them.
The line of full denial of the accusations was followed – at the same time – the first four apologized in Thessaloniki. According to the indictment, they appear to have had a regional involvement in the alleged action of the circuit and were released on the condition of a ban on leaving the country. The head of this group appears to have been the 63 -year -old who, according to the indictment, was taking advantage of his interconnections with archaeologists from various areas of Greek territory, with the aim of further promoting ancient objects, both inside the country and abroad.
Members of this group, in order to avoid their location, used contrasting techniques, while for their communications they used passwords and coded terminology, such as “baubles” for ancient coins, “berets” for “black” findings, “blacks” They had little commercial value.
In total, police investigations were seized – among other things – a clay head, a small silver statue, a cross, 18 rings, three bracelets, 17 jewelry, three statues, tombstones and 27 vessels, thousands excavations), dozens of metal detection and detection devices, a revolver and a pistol. The seized ancient monuments and the images were sent to the competent Ephorate of Antiquities for guard and final assessment and evaluation.
