Columbus’s hydrothermal field is being explored with IRIS robotic vehicle, first time after the seismic crisis (in February 2025)
The Santorini Santorini Observatory of Santorini’s Underwater Observatory participates in the oceanographic mission of Hydromox-Hydrothermal Modulation of Caldera Explosivity with the English Oceanograph Discovery in Caldera, Santorini and Columbus.
Columbus’s hydrothermal field is being explored with the IRIS robotic vehicle, for the first time since the seismic crisis (February 2025) to:
- to collect fluids and gases from hydrothermal chimneys with special samples,
- to study the temperature of fluids in the chimneys and in the volcano crater
- Collect samples of chimney and sediment for geochemical and microbiological analyzes with special nuclei
- to measure CO2 with a special censor
- to place special Santory thermometers in active chimneys
- to collect Santory’s organs to process data
- to collect water with special samples in the water column for geochemical analyzes
- to visualize parts of the volcano that have never been explored.
All measurements will be compared to those made by the Santory before the seismic crisis to make comparable results.
The Columbus submarine volcano is an important natural workshop and international research missions in collaboration with Santory, study its capacity, using innovative maritime research machinery.
