The possibility of calling for Brussels to initiate disciplinary procedures against Athens is being considered by the European Union border service as its executive in Politico and Welt said, as it claims, there is a great deal of disappointment from repeated repulsions of immigrants from Greece.

Fundamental rights Jonas Grimheden, who makes recommendations to the Governing Board of the Agency, said that Greece’s behavior has given Frontex two options: either to suspend its mission to the country or ask the European Commission to initiate proceedings against Greece.

Grimheden, however, stressed that the interruption of work would not better serve the organization’s mission because there must be supervision of the Greek government.

“If Frontex leaves Greece, there would no longer be any way to find out how the authorities are dealing with the arriving immigrants. The service ensures monitoring and transparency, “he said.

“There must be some kind of punishment. The Commission itself is able to initiate procedures for violating a Member State, “Grimheden said. “Frontex cannot solve the problem on its own.”

He suggested that the Commission could link Greece to the human rights of immigrants by accessing capital. In an extreme case, if Athens continues to avoid its responsibilities towards immigrants, the Commission could initiate legal proceedings before the EU Court of Justice.

These harsh statements by Grimheden come after the Organization’s threat to cut funding for coastguard boats, co -financed by Frontex, unless Greeks apply key recommendations for migration policy.

The committee did not respond to repeated requests for annotation.

In May 2023, the EU called on Greece to investigate complaints of abandoning immigrants at sea and deportations.

Greece currently has 13 open cases for suspected human rights violations concerning immigrants, the largest number of incidents in the whole block. In 2024, almost one -third of Frontex’s 56 open affairs concerned the country.

“Greece remains our biggest problem with human rights,” said Grimheden, who is responsible for Frontex’s fundamental rights since 2021.

In 2023, Grimheden also proposed the temporary suspension of the organization’s activities in Greece due to violations of fundamental rights, which can be done under Article 46.

If the Agency suspendes its mission, however, it would mean withdrawal of ships, border guards and aircraft from one of the busiest migration corridors in Europe.

Many of the open cases are related to the well -known pushbacks by Greek officials. This practice is illegal in accordance with the United Nations Convention on Refugees and International Law. In January, the European Court of Human Rights ruled the Greek authorities guilty of systematic repellents of immigrants and violating human rights legislation in the process.

In June 2023, hundreds of immigrants died at sea when a fishing boat sank off the coast of the southern peninsula of Greece while trying to reach Europe from Libya. An independent investigation by the Ombudsman recommended disciplinary action in eight ports involved in the incident.

“The humanitarian work of the Greek Coast Guard is unquestionable and that is why it is therefore widely recognized,” Nikolaos Alexiou’s Press Officer Nikolaos Alexiou told Politico.

“In the event of possible deviations from the required behavior, internal research and monitoring mechanisms are activated, independently or in parallel with the judicial procedures or investigations carried out by other competent authorities. The Greek Coast Guard is fully cooperating with these authorities, ”he said.
