The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Mr. Hieronymos made today, Thursday, May 29, 2025, the following statement on the matter that has arisen with Holy Monastery of St. Catherine:

Following yesterday’s scandalous decision to violently violate human and religious freedoms, issued by the Egyptian judicial authorities, the oldest worldwide Orthodox Christian monument, the Holy Monastery of St. Catherine of Theopistus Mount Sinai, enters a large test, referring to other dark times …

In essence, the Egyptian government itself has decided, despite the opposite of the Egyptian president’s recent commitments to the Greek Prime Minister, to overthrow any concept of law And, in essence, to attempt to erase the monastery itself, in itself, in itself its entire function, its very worship and spiritual work, similar to cultural.

The property of the monastery is deprived and confiscated and this spiritual beacon of Orthodoxy and Hellenism is now facing the issue of true survival.

With immense sadness and reasonable anger, I call on every Greek and every international authority to perceive the highest stakes and to immediately turn to protect the fundamental religious freedoms of the Holy Monastery of Sinai.

I strongly condemn any attempt to change the regime, For 15 centuries it has been in the area and I appeal to the responsible Greek government and personally to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to act directly so that the normal and legal order can be reinstated and not to be abolished by the Holy Monastery.

I wholeheartedly express my brotherly solidarity both to the Brotherhood and to her teacher, His Eminence Archbishop Sinai, Faran and Raito K. Damianosas well as to the Greek brothers, who are sacrificing in the wider area of Sinai. I don’t want and I can’t believe, finally, how Today Hellenism and Orthodoxy are experiencing yet another historical “Fall”. This is not able to allow it ».
