On the occasion of World Smoking Day, honored tomorrow, Deputy Minister of Health Marios Themistokleous visited the Evangelismos Hospital Smoking Center today – one of the most successful clinics in the country, with high success rates.
The clinic has impressive results, with a success rate on smoking stopping 65%, while more than 1,000 citizens were served last year.
During his visit, Mr. Themistokleous talked to medical and nursing staff, as well as with former smokers who managed to interrupt the harmful habit thanks to the specialized support of the clinic team.
The deputy minister emphasized the importance of smoking cessation clinics, which today amount to 52 across Greece. These clinics offer comprehensive services such as counseling, psychological support, medication and medical examinations, aiming to substantial support for citizens who wish to stop smoking.
The clinics are staffed by specialized scientists – pulmonologists, cardiologists and psychologists – depending on the needs of each health structure.
In his statement, Mr. Themistocles pointed out:
“Smoking is one of the most serious public health threats in our country. Although its consumption has declined in the last decade, it remains at a worrying level: one in four adults still smoke daily, while smoking is responsible for 26% of cancer deaths in Greece.
We are here today to send a clear message: Stop smoking is possible and deserves every effort. The Ministry of Health will continue to strengthen smoking cessation and support every citizen who makes the decision to improve his health and life. “
Today’s visit by the Deputy Minister highlights the state’s practical support to the citizens who choose to be detached from addiction to smoking and emphasizes the role of these structures as a key pillar of prevention and public health.
It is worth noting, however, that according to a statement from the Pan -Hellenic Medical Association, the application of the anti -smoking law has significant relaxation, as checks have been limited, leaving the institutional framework inappropriate in practice.
