The bill of the Ministry of Health was approved by a majority by the Social Affairs Committee of the Parliament with the ratification of the donation of the “Stavros Niarchos Foundation” for the construction of a state-of-the-art hospital in Sparta and extension of measures to address the pandemic.
ND and KINAL voted in favor of the principle of the bill, while SYRIZA and EL.LY reserved themselves for the Plenary Session, while KKE with MERA25 voted against.
What Gaga said
Deputy Health Minister Asimina Gaga reiterated that “vaccination is a great safety to deal with the pandemic”, while defending the measure of compulsory vaccination of health workers, stressing that the remaining small percentage must be convinced to be vaccinated.
“It is less than 3% of the percentage of health workers who have not been vaccinated. It is therefore important to persuade this small percentage to be vaccinated, primarily for their own health safety, as there is a greater risk of their disease, but also because they set an example to the public. The vaccine is a great safety. “If we did not have the vaccines, we would have had more deaths”, Ms. Gaga emphasized characteristically, while leaving open the possibility of deciding on a fourth dose of vaccination from the autumn.
At the same time, Ms. Gaga assured that there is no problem of operation of public hospitals, noting that “for a long time they have been staffed and there are many more people who work compared to those who are on suspension.”
The Deputy Minister of Health also defended the transformation of the character of the Sparta hospital from NPDD to NPID, citing as an example the “Papageorgiou” hospital, which, as she said, provides excellent care and medical services.
“Certainly a hospital with an NPID character, has more flexibility, works better and more efficiently with the examples we have so far. “So what we should all have in the plans is a public health with a good evaluation that assures all citizens that they have the care they deserve,” he underlined.
Finally, Ms. Gaga, responding to her president who disagreed with the operation of afternoon surgeries, countered that “the public health system will be stimulated – which now closes at 3 pm – if the clinics open in the afternoon and will help the general population, with a small burden on the patient “.
“We are definitely interested in making public hospitals better, more efficient and reducing waiting lists. “They will operate under the same conditions and there will be no bypassing of the list”, added Ms. Gaga and concluded:
“We must all sit down together, organize a better public health system. For me, the public health system is a national issue. The decision may be political but it is a national issue. “We can not have a public health system or it can be done based on what suits everyone, but based on how it works better and more efficiently.”
Reactions
Earlier, the relevant non-parliamentary bodies that had been invited to the Commission to express their views, described as important and valuable the donation of the “Stavros Niarchos Foundation”, while expressing some reservations both about the conversion of Sparta hospital into NPID measures to address the pandemic.
Panagiotis Georgantas, president of the Association of NSS Doctors of Laconia, pointed out that the operation of the Sparta hospital as NPID will result in its better flexibility while noting the need to fill the gaps in organic positions.
Athanasios Exadaktylos, president of the Panhellenic Medical Association, stated that once again the “Stavros Niarchos Foundation helps in a thorough and effective way to strengthen the NSS”.
At the same time, he asked not to give further extension for conducting rapid tests in non-licensed areas, characterizing the measure as unnecessary and unscientific.
For his part, Apostolos Valtas, president of the Panhellenic Pharmaceutical Association of Greece spoke about very positive facilities for the insured, so that they do not suffer as the pandemic is still ahead of us.
He even described the provision for the possibility of pharmacies to issue digital vaccination and disease certificates for coronavirus as very positive, emphasizing that “they managed to solve many problems, especially in many islands, where there were no diagnostic centers”.
Panagiotis Georgantas, president of the Association of NSS doctors of Laconia, expressed his warm thanks “for the great donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation”, pointing out that he comes to solve a huge problem faced by the prefecture.
Michael Giannakos, president of POEDIN, claimed that “another opportunity is being lost to reorganize the NSS”.
At the same time, he opposed the extension of the suspension measure of unvaccinated health workers, emphasizing that this measure should be lifted because it has no health benefits but also to strengthen the understaffed NSS with the return of a total of 7,500 suspended health workers.
He also opposed the conversion of public hospitals into NPIDs, while calling for the permanent tenure of all those who work under fixed-term contracts with the NSS and work in guarding and cleaning, and to end their hostage status because they are always at the forefront and cover permanent and ongoing needs.
“A solution must be found by all parties and they must be made permanent. “Next Wednesday we will be out of Parliament so that the public health system is not further privatized,” he concluded.
Spyros Arnaoutos, secretary of the Medical Association and vice-president of the hospital doctors of Laconia, expressed his warm thanks for the donation of the “Stavros Niarchos Foundation”, describing it as valuable and emphasizing that it will enable a huge and important project in the South.
