One of the most important landmarks of the capital, the “Loumpadiaris”, which in recent years has collapsed abandoned, acquires the municipality of Athens – and as stressed by Mayor Costas Bakogiannis, will be rebuilt as Pikionis had inspired.

The relevant concession contract to the municipality, by ETAD, was approved during Monday’s meeting by the Athens City Council, with the votes of the parties of the mayor K. Bakogiannis, and “Athens Are You” by Pavlos Geroulanos. Also, by a majority, the municipal council approved the respective concessions for the concession of two other spaces by ETAD to the municipality: the building of the “Empros” theater and the stadium in Goudi.

“This is a very important day for the municipality of Athens,” said Mr. Bakoyannis, noting that since the time of the late Miltiadis Evert, the “portfolio” of the municipality has expanded so much. Mr. Bakoyannis pledged to use them, which will be preceded by an “exhaustive consultation”, the results of which will be taken into account by the municipal council when it is going to decide. An inter-parliamentary committee will be set up for this purpose.

Especially for “Lumbadiaris” and refuting the objections of the opposition, Mr. Bakoyannis stressed: “Our goal is to restore the original spirit, the original philosophy of Pikionis”, emphasizing that Athens does not need another cafe or a place wedding events “.

The “Open City” was against the contract with its leader, Nasos Iliopoulos, to mention the lack of topography, and with Mr. Bakoyannis pointing out that the proposal contains a document of the certified appraiser, with detailed dimensions of the space provided and the relevant Government Gazette of 1958 which includes topographic. Also in favor was the leader of the “People’s Rally”, Nikos Sofianos, who pointed out that the concession is for 20 plus 10 years and described the contract as “leontio” to the detriment of the municipality, noting that the municipality bears a number of costs (studies, reconstruction), rent, etc.

The leader of the “Rebellion in the Neighborhoods of Athens” faction, Petros Konstantinou, attributed a plan for tourism and capitalist exploitation of the free spaces to the municipal authority Bakoyannis, while the head of the “Anti-Capitalist” by voting against both.

For “Empros”, the concession of which was approved again with the votes of Bakoyannis and Geroulanos, the mayor of Athens stressed, among other things, that it is connected with the history of the city, not only as an architectural monument, but also in terms of its culture. There is no doubt that we need cultural lungs, non-profit and open spaces, but we want this space to function with respect for artists, people of the arts, their collectives, their organizations, their groups. with respect to the residents and professionals of the wider area.We want it to operate safely. We want to secure movable and immovable property and of course we want this building to be maintained and restored for future generations. We are talking about of its historical identity and its function, as a place of culture “said Mr. Bakoyannis.

The head of the “Open City”, Nassos Iliopoulos, called on the municipality of Athens to learn from the good European examples that exist for similar spaces. “To be in the municipality, but to give space to those who supported him since 2011”, stressed Mr. Iliopoulos, stating that he is voting against the contract. Mr. Geroulanos pointed out that “our job is to ensure that it remains a space of culture and free expression, a space that the people who kept it alive, will keep it alive but within a framework provided by the municipality.”

The “People’s Rally”, as stated by the leader Nikos Sofianos, voted against the contract due to the lease and the terms contained in it.

There was a wide discussion at the beginning of the meeting on the issue of the amendment of the Ministry of Interior, which was voted last week and which stipulates that it is mandatory for municipalities to exhaust all legal remedies in requests of employees (permanent, etc.).

Mr. Iliopoulos characterized this regulation as “devastating for the employees” and Mr. Geroulanos as an “insult to the Local Government”, asking the mayor to raise the issue with KEDE. For his part, Mr. Bakoyannis stated that the amendment has already been voted and noted that “we must be realistic. To claim the positions that the municipality needs in the recruitment planning. This is the big bet for the municipality of Athens to acquire the necessary staff “.
