OR Region of Crete proceeds to the creation of a new Regional mechanism for climate changeseeking to turn theoretical approaches into tangible solutions and actions to protect the environment and the durability of the area.
During the signing of the Planning Agreement between the Region of Crete and seven top scientific and research institutions, Crete Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis underlined the need to “We go from theory to practice to deal with climate change. Not only studies, but also results that can come with the collaboration of everyone ». This contract reinforces the link between scientific research with the daily reality and problems of Crete, strengthening the prospects sustainable development.
Enhance environmental resilience
The new mechanism, which will function as Node of Scientific Knowledge, Applied Actions and Educational Initiativesaims to adapt Crete to the challenges of climate change. In this effort they raise their strengths:
- The Hellenic Mediterranean University (ELMEPA)
- The Technical University of Crete
- The University of Crete
- The Technology and Research Foundation (FORTH)
- The Hellenic Center for Marine Research (ELKETHE)
- The National Observatory of Athens
- ELGO “Dimitra”
Central tool of the mechanism is the new Climate Change Observatorywhich will undertake the collection, analysis and evaluation of data to effectively monitor the progress of the actions, with the ability to adapt where necessary.
Scientific synergy and social participation
The value of this important initiative was highlighted, in their public placements, by ELMEPA Rector Nikos Katsarakis, ITE President Basil Charmandaris, Professor of Chemistry Maria Kanakidou (University of Crete), Vice-Rector of Research Dinos Mylonas, as well as the Vice -Mayor of Climate Change Yiannis Anastasakis.
The ceremony was also attended by the Vice -Rector of Research and Innovation of ELMEPEA Athanasios Malamos, the project coordinator, Professor Emmanouil Karapidakis, the scientific officers Dionysia Kolokotsas (Polytechnic of Crete) Change, Eleni Kargakis.
The project is a standard initiative of the region and is funded by the Green fundwith the aim of linking scientific knowledge to practical application, for the benefit of society and the natural environment of Crete.
