“With the new bill for higher education that concerns the enhancement of quality, functionality and the connection of universities with society, we are reaching the completion of all the announcements that we had presented as SW in 2018”, stressed the Minister of Education Niki Kerameos in a speech for the training at the event of DEEP of ND in Kozani.
Ms. Kerameos made an extensive report on all her work at the Ministry of Education, stressing that all the changes were made “from the bottom up”, starting from the kindergarten and ending at the top of the pyramid which is the university. He referred to the difficulties, such as the refugee in Evros, the pandemic, the natural disasters with the floods and the fires, but also to the war, issues that, as he said, “created and are creating a blocking environment in the smooth implementation of the government project”. He stated that “we managed to put into practice most of the announcements of the government due to the unwavering position of Kyriakos Mitsotakis to continue the reform work of the government”.
He spoke about the establishment of the kindergarten from the age of 4, although, as he mentioned, it had been voted by the previous government, but without the appropriate spaces and rooms. He also referred to the introduction of a foreign language by the kindergarten as a factor in the development of skills in young children. He referred to the skill workshops starting from primary school, with the aim of cultivating cooperation and skills in issues of climate change, natural disasters, issues related to rights and diversity, but also in matters of innovation with robotics programs.
He made extensive reference to the appointment of teachers in education with the 4,500 Special Education teachers and the 11,000 teachers in General and Technical education. “We are investing in what is most valuable in education, and that is the human resources,” he said.
He referred to the change of curricula, a project which, as he stated, “had started from previous governments, while the multiple book is being introduced, so that students can combine different sources, developing their critical thinking”.
On the issue of the operation of the Experimental and Model schools, he stated that “for this year there are 4,187 places, while at the same time 18,000 applications have been submitted”. He promised that “the institution will be extended to other cities in Greece.” On the subject of evaluation, he stressed that “it is applied in 99.2% of the schools in the country and it is something that will help our children to become better”.
On the issue of vocational education, he stated that “we are moving forward seeing the needs of society and the market” and cited as an example the demand for technical professions in Western Macedonia that will be related to green development and change of the productive model.
Finally, as far as the university is concerned, he spoke about the introduction of the minimum admission base and the abolition of the asylum that was in the immediate pre-election commitments of ND. He referred to the new law on higher education that was recently presented to the cabinet and provides for “Erasmus” Interior, so that the student can attend for another semester another university department with a similar or different subject of study. He referred to the introduction of “industrial doctorates” as a way out for research in collaboration with industry and promised that there would be a full framework for this development. In the internship industry, he said that minimum insurance coverage and compensation will be recognized, which will strengthen the institution, while he announced that the university will be able to share knowledge and actions with society, for example by providing free advice and services to vulnerable groups.
