By the end of the year, the construction of the new Ioannina-Kakavia Motorway begins, which is essentially an expansion of the Ionian Road. A state-of-the-art highway will be built as a public project that will connect the Ionian Road and the Egnatia Road, through the city of Ioannina with Kalpaki and the beautiful and highly tourist Zagorochoria and reach Kakavia and Kakavia.

As the Secretary General of Infrastructure, Dimitris Anagnopoulos, told RES-EIA, at the end of 2025 the earthworks are starting and the entire project is expected to be ready in about 4.5 years.

The project is particularly difficult technically as it is done in an area with mountainous relief. Its object is the design and construction of the Ionian Road section from its contribution to Egnatia Road to Kakavia and the Greek -Albanian border. Includes the completion of the Egnatia junction (K0), the construction of the motorway in the “Ionian Ionian Ionian Odos Opposition with the Egnatia Road to the 46.4 km long junction” with the construction of 6 nodes (one of which is the first of which is the first and the first) Local road network. The upgrade of the Kalpaki-Kakavia section, about 23km long. is the subject of the second option.

The project budget is EUR 310 million (including the 2 Outs) and is funded by the Regional Development Pact (NSRF 2021-2027)

At this stage the contractor has been installed, the quality quality program has been submitted and approved, the precursors have begun to build the project and the execution of the approved geotechnical work program. The preparation, control and approvals of the definitive studies of the project are under way in accordance with the contractor’s contractual obligations and the approved timetable. Finally, it is expected that the relevant redemption of the affected properties is expected and the estimated launch of earthworks is by the end of the year.

It is a cross -border project for the country, as it essentially expands and connects the two major highways that are currently running western and northern Greece, Ionia Road and Egnatia Road reaching the Greek -Albanian border. With the Ioannina-Kakavia motorway, Epirus acquires a new infrastructure, which will contribute to regional and national development.
