A huge surprise awaited the Cash or Trash viewers yesterday, as one of the “sellers” who appeared was Olympic Pyrros Dimas.
The current technical director of the United States National Weightlifting Team brought the Olympic torch to the Olympic torch that kept the last torchbearer at Kallimarmaro Stadium before the London Olympics the 2012 (With this torch he handed over the Olympic flame).
“The object I bring to you illuminated all of London in 2012 and all humanity,” Pyrros Dimas said.
The torch was sold for 10.200 eurosmoney that Pyrrhus Dimas offered to SOS Children’s Villages.
Intense reaction from the EEA
The Olympician move caused the wrath of the Greek Olympic Committee, which issued a statement.
“The use of the Olympic torque for the purposes of promoting, advertising or commercialization, in addition to its historical and symbolic character, is contrary to the principles of the Olympic movement,” the EEA said.
The announcement continues:
“Although the great personality of Pyrrhus Dimas is recognized as a national model and his intention, as the auction was aimed at donating to the SOS Children’s Villages, the connection of his presence with the commercial promotion of the torch is characterized.”
In the letter, the EEA calls on the television station that there is no time to promote the Olympic torch or other Olympic symbols in the context that may be perceived as commercial use, so as to safeguard the integrity of the Olympic movement, while concluding that it “explicitly reserves its right”.
