The Classifications of new cars in the EU From the beginning of 2025 to August, they saw a marginal reduction of 0.1% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, despite the positive course of the last two months.
The market share of pure battery car was kept at 15.8% for the period until August 2025, according to official data from the European Car Manufacturers Union (ACEA). This performance remains lower than the target set to transition to electric drive. At the same time, hybrid electric cars continue to be the most popular choice among buyers.
According to ACEA data, battery cars recorded an increase in their market share from 12.6% in 2024 to 15.8% in 2025. Hybrid-electric cars increased, reaching 34.7% of the market, while the total share of gasoline and oil car was reduced to 37% from 47%.
In the first eight months of 2025, 1,132,603 ​​new EU electric cars were classified in the EU. Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands increased a significant increase in classifications, while France recorded a slight 2%reduction, despite the positive annual change in August.
The new hybrid-electric cars ranked 2,485,069 points, with a strong rise to the major markets of France, Spain, Germany and Italy. Plug-in hybrid cars reached 631,783 points, mainly reinforced by the markets of Spain, Germany and Italy, representing 8.8% of the registrations.
Redistribution of shares on the car market
The annual variation in August 2025 showed an increase of 30.2% for battery electric cars, 14.1% for hybrids and 54.5% for plug-in hybrids, continuing a positive series of growth.
In contrast, gasoline-powered car regulations declined by 19.7%, with France recording the highest drop (-33.5%) and followed by Germany, Italy and Spain. The market share of gasoline cars was reduced to 28.1% from 34.9% last year, and diesel cars also declined, with a 9.4% share and a 25.7% reduction in registrations.
