Most of the citizens of the country consume in the food, housing, housing and transport, according to ELSTAT family budget research.
The key conclusions of the research are as follows:
– The average annual household expenditure on purchases in 2024 amounted to 20,694.48 euros (1,724.54 per month), recording a 3.6%increase in current prices compared to 2023.
– 50% of households spend more than 1,338 euros per month.
– Households residing in a rented house spent 17.1% of their budget on average on rent.
– The share of average expenditure for food and non -alcoholic beverages and housing of its households poorer 20% of the population is up to 55.9% of expenditure of households while the corresponding share of richer 20% of the population is up to 24.7%.
– The highest average annual expenditure was recorded in the Attica Region and amounted to EUR 24,363.24, while the lowest in the Region of Central Greece and amounted to EUR 14,214.96.
– The average annual household expenditure in 2024 is reduced by 16.6% compared to 2008.
– The average annual household expenditure on purchases in 2024 amounted to EUR 20,694.48 (EUR 1,724.54 per month), recording an annual increase of 3.6% compared to 2023 (EUR 1,663.82). At constant prices, the average annual household spending increased to 1% or 213.55 euros, due to the inflation effect, according to the 2024 consumer price index which was 2.6%.
– The average annual expenditure for each person, in 2024, amounted to EUR 8,740.20, recording an increase of 3.7% (EUR 310.68 per year) compared to 2023 (EUR 8,429.52).
Basic findings:
-The largest share of the costs of the average household budget at current prices concerns:
*In food supplies and non -alcoholic beverages (20.7%),
*in housing (14.4%) and
*Transport (13.3%), while the smallest share of spending (2.2%) corresponds to security and financial services.
The highest percentage increase in household spending, compared to previous survey (2023), is presented in groups:
*Recreation and culture (13.5%),
*clothing and footwear (9.5%) and
*Restaurants, cafes and hotels (6.5%),
while a 1.1% decrease is recorded in constant goods and communications.
Regarding the costs of food and non -alcoholic beverages, compared to previous research (2023), there is an increase in the average monthly expense (current prices) in the following types:
*Oils and fats (12.6%),
*fish (9.3%),
*fruit (4.8%),
*sugar, jams, honey, syrups, chocolate (4.5%),
*Metal waters, soft drinks, fruit and vegetable juices (3.6%),
*Vegetables (3.3%),
*meat (3%), and
*Coffee, tea and cocoa (2.8%).
While a decrease in average monthly expenditure (current prices) is observed in the following types:
*Other food items (11.9%),
*Dairy products and eggs (1.7%), and
*Flour, bread, cereals (0.8%).
Cheaper life in the province
Households residing in rural areas spend an average of € 1,296.41 per month, while those living in urban areas of € 1,821.26.
Therefore, households residing in rural areas spend averaging 28.8% less than households residing in urban areas.
Households residing in the Attica Region spent, on average, 117.7% of the average monthly spending of the country’s households, while those residing in Central Greece 68.7%.
In 2024, compared to 2023, households residing in the Region of Western Macedonia increased their spending on average of 9.8%, while those residing in the Peloponnese Region by 1.4%.
The differences between poor and rich households
Households of the poorest 20% of the population increased their spending compared to 2023 by 4.8%, while households of the richest 20% of the population by 5.4%.
The share of the average equivalent expenditure on food supplies of the poorest 20% of the population is 33.5% of household spending, while the corresponding share of the richest 20% of the population is 12.7%.
The average monthly equivalent expense of poor households is estimated at 32.2% of the costs of non -poor households.
Poor households spend 33.7% of their average budget on food and non -alcoholic beverages, while non -poor 19.7%.

Research data also shows that households use central heating (oil, gas, etc.) as a main source of heating at 56.2% and have::

Increases and reductions
In most categories of the group Nutrition and Alcoholics drinks are observed as follows:
*olive oil 13.9%,
*Eggs 5.6%,
*Alcoholic beverages 5.5%,
*4.2%cigarettes,
*Bread, bakery species 3.7%,
*milk 3.6%,
*fruits of 1.7%,
*0.8%vegetables,
*0.6%cheese.
The average monthly quantity increased in the following categories of the food and alcohol group:
*fish 6.2%,
*Yogurt 3.6%,
*pasta 0.7%,
*0.5%rice,
*meat 0.4%.
The average monthly quantity energy consumed in the main residence showed an increase in:
*Electricity 8.3%,
and reduction to:
*solid fuels (firewood, pellets, core, etc.) 16.2%,
*Natural gas 14.8%,
*Liquid fuels 8.3%,
*LPG 0.1%.
