“We claim the installation in Thessaloniki new Cancer Research and Treatment Center with CERN innovative technology“, Announced the Regional Governor of Central Macedonia Apostolos Tzitzikostastoday, at the beginning of the three – day conference on research and cancer treatment with this innovative method, carried out in Thessaloniki.
The conference is organized by Region of Central Macedonia and the Technopolis of Thessalonikiwith the support of the Regional Development Fund of the Region and the Ministry of Development and Investment.
The theme of the conference is “Southeastern European Initiative for Ion Cancer Research and Treatment” and is part of the transnational initiative SEEIIST (South Eastern European International Institute for Sustainable Technologies), which relies on technologies developed at CERN.
As Mr. Tzitzikostas explained, the transnational initiative SEEIIST, among other things, concerns the creation in one of the countries of Southeastern Europe of a new Cancer Treatment Research Center based on the method of irradiation of cancerous tumors with protons and heavy ions (A). THE ion radiation therapyhe added, may aim to radically treat cancerous tumors more accurately than conventional radiotherapy, while protecting neighboring healthy tissues.
Mr. Tzitzikostas pointed out that priority for the Region is the continuous strengthening of domestic innovation companies. “The Region is already utilizing resources of 100 million euros for research and innovation from the NSRF, which is being completed, while we plan to direct corresponding resources in the new programming period 2021 – 2027, as a sign of our determination to be a key development pillar for “Central Macedonia”, he noted.
