The three Turks who are accused of the incident with the shootings against officials of the National Intelligence Service (EYP), last May, in Tagarades, Thessaloniki, were referred to the audience of the Joint Jury Court of Edessa to be tried.

The trial was set for next January, with the three defendants – aged 49, 23 and 43 – being prosecuted, as the case may be, for attempted murder with complicity, simple complicity in this act, illegal carrying of weapons and use of weapons. All were deemed temporary detainees after their apologies to the Thessaloniki investigator.

The episode happened on May 27, 2025, during an operation by officials of the intelligence service regarding the so-called Turkish organized crime operating in our country. The three defendants, who were suspected of being part of a criminal group, were riding in a jeep that had been put under surveillance by EYP officials.

According to the indictment, at some point the Turks’ car stopped at a gas station and one of its passengers got out and opened fire on an EYP car in which only the driver was on board. No injuries resulted from the incident, with the three Turks escaping.

However, a little over 24 hours later and after a manhunt launched by the police, the 49-year-old man who, according to the case file, shot, was arrested, in a mountainous village of Rhodope, while it seems that he was planning his escape to Bulgaria. Apologizing before the interrogator, he allegedly argued that he acted under the weight of fear and panic, considering that he was threatened – as he said – by people connected to the secret services of his country. “There is no way I would have acted like that if I had known they were EYP people,” he reportedly said, apologizing for his action.

His two co-accused were subsequently arrested in the Bulgarian city of Svilengrad, near the border with Turkey. They were extradited to Greece and asked to apologize to the same investigator. “We had no participation or involvement in the incident nor did we know that our compatriot is armed,” they claimed, according to the same information.
