The first phone call of fraudsters took place this morning at the landline of eighty-year-old K.G. in the Kalamaria area of Thessaloniki and an unknown woman on the other end of the line, the well-known fairy tale began:Come on mom I hit a kid with my car and I’m at the police station I need money». But the lady, suspicious as she was, answered her with a “yes, yes, we’ve caught you scammers” and hung up on her.

No more than five minutes and the phone rang again. This time, it was one angry man who threatened her that he knows where she lives, he’s going to cut off her head and hang it on her balcony. Frightened, the woman hung up on him without saying anything.

Followed shortly third phone call. The unknown voice, in the same threatening tone, told the 80-year-old that it is ten people, will come to the house, tie her up and rot her on the wood. She hung up the phone again and suspecting that they might actually know where she lives because they insist, she went to the neighbor taking the landline phone with her.

The perpetrators, after seeing that they did not catch the first “classic” trick and the threats, they changed the trope. The fourth call was from a woman again, who told her she was calling Prosecution of Cybercrime and her name was Papanikolaou. When the old woman asked her what she wanted, she answered how so they caught the spiral who engages in telephone scams and that in the pocket of one they found a piece of paper with ten telephone numbers, including hers.

Her “policeman” allegedly developed a whole theory about how to protect herself from … fraudsters. “Don’t trust anyone, madam, frauds are known, they even impersonate employees of PPC or telephone companies, etc etc” he said and at the end he added: “If they call you again, don’t hang up, leave it open and dial 100».

The eighty-year-old was listening to the sermon against the “swindlers” and momentarily “stung”. She thought, however, that a telephone fraud could not be “solved” so quickly and that they caught a man who had a paper with 10 telephone numbers in his pocket, including hers. Not even two hours had passed since the previous phone calls, from the first to the last!

The woman who was on the other end of the phone line, according to the 80-year-old’s testimony, spoke excellent Greek, she just had a “strange accent». When he asked her where she was from, because she could discern “some accent” (the prospective victim was a teacher in her youth), she said Podia.

But God protects the thief, but he also protects the householder. “I’m a Pontian too, but the Pontians don’t talk like that” he answered her… But she continued the “poem”, allegedly cursing the fraudsters. He even urged her if they called her again to leave the phone on, press 100 and recommended that they do an on-the-spot test. “No need, I got it, as soon as they call me I will press this number” he told her to avoid her and hung up.

Repeated calls followed but the woman did not pick up the phone. He then informed the Police who recorded the incident and advised them to be careful.

Somewhere here the eighty-year-old’s adventure ended, but from her narrative it emerges that the spirals that deceive the world have “raised a level” in methods and audacity, reaching the point of openly threatening and terrorizing their prospective victims. In this case they were unlucky because the woman, informed and therefore suspicious, dealt with them as she should, but this is not always the case.
