Margaritis Schoinas, Vice-President of the Commission, expressed his confidence that Ukraine will join the European Union at the 7th Delphi Economic Forum.

“Democracy was the prerogative of the few in the previous decades in the 1960s and spread in the following decades. Our society has reached the gates of Russia, they consider this a threat,” he said.

As the Vice President of the Commission explained the war in Ukraine has nothing to do with NATO, it is in fact a democracy against totalitarianism. “Ukraine will become a member of the European Union … I have no doubt that the Ukrainians will become a member of the EU, they have won this with their courage,” he said. “I do not know about other organizations,” he said.

“We need to change Europe from something that is in our minds to something that is in our hearts,” he said.

He noted that the first “European Union” took place in Greece, citing Amfiktionia as an example.

Floros: If we are not at the table we will be on the menu

Nobody expected what will happen in Ukraine, we are watching, and if necessary we will play our role, stressed at the Forum the Chief of the General Staff of National Defense, General Konstantinos Floros.

“Our role in the region is stabilizing, of course we have the problem of Turkey, we are a state under threat,” Mr Floros said.

Two key points for the country, Mr. Floros explained, are Souda and Alexandroupolis for the passage of troops where needed. Due to the geopolitical situation, the geopolitical value of Souda has emerged to the highest degree.

Emphasizing the value of the alliances, he characteristically stated that “if we are not at the table, we will be on the menu”, Greece must participate in the decisions and be self-sufficient in the ability to prevent.

The area of the Eastern Mediterranean is very important and Greece has a special weight due to its geographical role, Mr. Floros also stressed.

We strive to build bilateral, and multilateral, relations, as they are of great importance he explained. He cited the example of relations with Israel, to which he travels on Monday at the invitation of his counterpart.

Also at an excellent level are the relations with Egypt we do joint exercises (Medusa) once a year. Greece maintains very good relations with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, he said, while referring to the 3 + 1 scheme (Greece, Cyprus, Israel plus the USA). We have very good relations with the Balkan countries, added Konstantinos Floros.

Petraeus: “Putin underestimated Ukraine”

Speaking at the Forum yesterday, retired US General David Petraeus expressed the view that Russia had failed to achieve the main goal of the invasion, which was to replace Zelensky with a pro-Russian leader. . “Putin has clearly underestimated Ukraine’s potential and overestimated his own,” he said, adding that the Russian military had committed war crimes and that it was counting “catastrophic losses.” He praised the absolute determination of the Ukrainians, who are fighting for their survival and inspired by their president, adding that those who have remained in the country are doing their best to contribute to the military victory. He also mentioned some features that make the Ukrainian struggle stand out, such as initiative at a lower level but also ingenuity and creativity. On the contrary, he commented that the Russians have many shortcomings, while their communication system has collapsed and their strategy contains many wrong moves. Referring to NATO, he noted that the biggest “gift” after the Cold War is the existence of Putin and noted that nothing is the same after the invasion.
