Son Doong Cave: The Google Doodle for the largest cave in the world

by

Deep in the jungle Von Na-Ke Bang National Park (Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng), location included in UNESCO World Heritage Sitesis a natural phenomenon unique on planet Earth: the huge Son Dung cave (Sơn Đoòng Cave). Today’s Google Doodle is dedicated to this colossal cavewhich was only discovered in 2009.

The geologists estimate that Sean Dung (meaning Mountain River in Vietnamese) was formed before two to five million years before a local farmer, Ho Khan, arrived in 1990 at his huge entrance. THE cave remained intact until 2008 when Hahn managed to find the entry point again and in 2009 led Howard and Deb Libert of the British Association of Cave Studies. The intrepid speleologists conducted the first official research and concluded that it is the largest cave on the planet.

Inside intact inner chambers of Sun Dung (large enough to fit an entire 40-storey building block), scientists have discovered a wealth of record-breaking geological formations, including the largest limestone pearl and the highest stalagmite. In the giant sinks at the bottom of the cave, sunlight and water have created two virgin ecosystems jungle, in which they live flying foxesthe unique pythics living underground and white fish without eyes. One of these large rainforests is so huge that it even has its own local weather system!

In 2009 a trio British divers proved that there is still much to discover as he located one underwater tunnel which connected Seung Dung with another cave, adding another 1.7 million cubic meters to its titanium volume of 4.5 billion cubic meters.
