The long march for the polytechnic, which “closes” the three-day celebration of the 48th anniversary of the student uprising against the junta, was completed peacefully. However, strong police forces remain in the area.
About 25,000 protesters, according to police estimates, took part in the Polytechnic commemoration events and the traditional march to the US embassy. Among them are student associations, institutions, parties, organizations and unions.
A deterrent to tensions along the way, according to EL.AS officials, was the conversion of the law on the possession and use of Molotov cocktails into a felony, something that seems to have worked soothingly.
At the same time, the entire road network in the wider area of downtown Athens was recently opened to traffic. At the same time, about 300-400 people from anarchist collectives surrounded by police headed to the area of Exarcheia.
Several earlier State Security officials had made nine precautionary arrests. These individuals were later released.
The Minister of Citizen Protection Panagiotis Theodorikakos made the following statement after the completion of the events for the anniversary of the Polytechnic uprising:
“The events for the anniversary of November 17, 1973 throughout the country, with a focus on Athens, ended peacefully and with absolute calm. I want to thank for this all the citizens, the participants in the march and of course the forces of the Greek Police who contributed with their professionalism in maintaining order “.
The gates of the Polytechnic opened at 8 in the morning in order to complete the celebrations and the laying of wreaths and closed at around 13.00. Student associations gathered outside the Polytechnic building and headed to the American Embassy, while the “block” with the blood-stained flag of the Polytechnic, in front of the US embassy, held a separate march.
This year’s celebrations took place normally after last year’s postponement due to the pandemic, but with strict protection measures for all participants.
It is noted that in the morning, tension was caused when a group of people gathered did not allow the Inter-Parliamentary Committee to enter the courtyard to lay a wreath. At the same time, minor incidents occurred during the celebration of the 48th anniversary of the uprising against the dictatorship of the Colonels, on the morning of Wednesday, November 17, 2021. Groups of students, who had blocked the entrance, clashed trying to prevent MPs tribute.
