Electric vehicles drive on 800 volt technology, significantly reducing charging time

by

The evolution of electromobility is so great that in the coming years everything will change. Today, most electric vehicles on the market operate at 400 volts. But that will change in the coming years. The advanced 800 volt technology – at the moment – is used by only four companies: Audi, Porsche, Hyundai and Kia, which have partnered with Rimac Automobili and can sell 800 volt electric cars.

The only exception is the Lucid Air that operates with 900 volts and was created after exclusive technology. According to a report published in Automotive News, the people of the automotive industry are already working on 800 volt technology and plan to make their versions available by 2025.

The high voltage operation offers all these EVs high speeds and lower charging times which make them more attractive, as they can also be charged with very large fast chargers.

The obvious advantage of charging at 800 volts is the theoretical 50% reduction in charging time. Thus, the charge of the batteries will be reduced by half and if there is a fast charger then a charge of 10% to 80% will take only a few minutes. It seems that there is a consensus in this part of the car, both between the car industry and the suppliers, that the future of electric vehicles will be 800 volts.

Thus, the stay in a fast charger is significantly reduced, solving one of the basic problems of electrification. Long trips become part of the planning for electric cars. All that remains is for there to be a full development of electric mobility, improvement of the infrastructure that will bring fast chargers, while in the second phase the cost of acquiring an electric car should be reduced.
