For the initiatives of the National Observatory of Athens – which led to the implementation of flagship projects in the field of space and highlight Greece in a European Pillar of Innovation Development in New Space Technologies Communications – the Minister of Development, Takis Theodorikos, was informed by the Director of Development.

The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Development, Research and Innovation, Stavros Kalafatis.

According to a statement, Mr. Vassilakos presented the developments in a unique pilot experiment in the world in collaboration with NASA and ESA: communication with laser rays of the Kryoneri Observatory in Corinthia with a spaceship on Mars, at 300 million kilometers. The message was sent and a few minutes later the answer arrived at the Helmos Observatory. This is the deeper broadband in space, which can mean a real “revolution” in the field of telecommunications.

This pioneering experiment is involved in the National Observatory of Athens – and with its two observations in the Peloponnese – with the aim of turning the Kryoneri Observatory into the largest space hub in Southeast Europe. This iconic collaboration will be one of the main pillars in the thematic area of ​​optical and quantum communications and will act as a development factor, making the National Observatory of Athens and Greece an important player internationally in space applications and new technologies.
