In full swing is a large fire that broke out at noon on Tuesday in a forest area in the area of Varvitsa in Parnonas, Laconia and specifically in the municipal unit of Oinountos of the municipality of Sparta (borders Laconia – Arcadia).
According to the Fire Department, the fire has become large and the front is large as it has broken out in a mountainous and extremely inaccessible area, where the road network is non-existent, making its approach by vehicles and firefighters difficult and dangerous.
The fire burns large pines and low vegetation, however residential areas are not threatened. A total of 99 firefighters, 6 groups of pedestrians (among them the 1st EMAK), 24 vehicles are attempting to put out the fire, while volunteer firefighters and water carriers of the local government provide assistance.
On Tuesday, 2 aircraft (Canadair) attempted to stop at sunset, however, depending on the evolution of the fire, it will be decided whether they will operate this morning as well.
It is noted that out of the total forces, 15 firefighters, 5 vehicles and 1 group of pedestrians, went to the spot yesterday afternoon from Attica to assist in extinguishing the fire.
