New Mercedes-AMG SL

by

The new luxury Mercedes-AMG SL follows the history that has engraved this name. The sporty model with the classic fabric roof and the intense “open” character stands out from the configuration of 2 + 2 seats, something that is particularly useful for everyday use while its power on the road is controlled for the first time with the fully variable four-wheel drive AMG Performance 4MATIC + .

Under the hood, the AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine results in a high-performance driving experience. SL is celebrating an important birthday this year. Exactly 70 years ago, a sports car saw the light of day in Stuttgart and immediately became a legend.

With the 300 SL sports car (internal designation W194), the Mercedes-Benz brand has enjoyed one success after another on the world tracks since 1952, making the SL model name quickly become legendary. The successful racing car followed in 1954 the 300 SL sports car (W198), which became known as the “Gullwing” due to its unusual doors that opened reminiscent of seagull wings. Other milestones in the model’s history were the Pagoda (W113, 1963-1971), the evergreen R107 (1971-1989), which was built for 18 years, and its successor, the R129 (1989-1995).

This tradition is now continued by the latest generation SL, developed completely independently by Mercedes-AMG. The start-up concerns a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 AMG engine available in two performance levels. The engines are assembled entirely by hand at the company’s Affalterbach plant in accordance with the “One Man, One Engine” principle. On the top model, the SL 63 4MATIC +, the powertrain delivers 430 kW (585 hp) and delivers a maximum of 800 Nm of torque over a wide range of speeds from 2500 to 4500 rpm. Acceleration from 0-100 km / h takes only 3.6 seconds, while the top speed is 315 km / h. In the SL 55 4MATIC +, the V8 delivers 350 kW (476 hp) of power and 700 Nm of maximum torque. The 100 km / h sprint is completed in 3.9 seconds while the final speed reaches 295 km / h.

For the first time in SL’s long history, V8 models feature an active rear-wheel drive (HAL) as standard. Depending on the speed, the rear wheels turn either in the opposite direction (up to 100 km / h) or in the same direction (over 100 km / h) as the front wheels. Thus, the system allows for both flexible and stable handling.

The SL 55 4MATIC + comes standard with 19-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, optional in matt silver or black. The SL 63 4MATIC + features 20-inch AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels. The range of wheels includes a total of eight different variants, including two aerodynamically optimized 20-inch options in a 5-spoke or multi-spoke design. The range is completed with 21-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a 10-spoke design and 21-inch AMG forged wheels in a 5-spoke design, both in two color variants.

In the Greek market, the new Mercedes-AMG SL starts at 239,500 euros, while its most powerful version (SL 63 4MATIC +) reaches 275,500 euros.
