Google celebrates May Day with its Doodle

The Labor Day honors Google today with its Doodle.

Labor Day began in Chicago and was one of the highlights of the class struggle in modern times. In May 1886 the trade unions in Chicago revolted, demanding working hours of eight hours and better working conditions. It is also celebrated as a day of flowers and Spring. The day has been instituted as a labor strike and all services and businesses remain closed.

The first labor movements in Greece were created at the same time as the development of tobacco growing in the 19th century. The first strike in Greece, then under Ottoman rule, broke out on May Day 1888 in the city of Drama. The main demand of the tobacco workers was ten hours of work, as at that time the workers were employed from twelve to thirteen hours a day.

In 1892, the first May Day rally in the modern Greek state took place, by the Socialist Association of Kallergis. In 1893, 2,000 workers demonstrated demanding an eight-hour Sunday holiday and state care for victims of accidents at work. In 1894 a large gathering took place, with the same demands, ending with 10 arrests. The arrest of the socialist Stavros Kallergis follows in August.

In 1936, the demonstrations by the tobacco workers of Thessaloniki culminated. The events began around February, with the occupation of a factory following the rejection of workers’ demands. She received the support of tobacco workers from other factories. Both the police and the army were used against them. There was no central gathering, but small ones with speakers in different parts of the city.

Workers’ mobilizations in the city culminated in May 1936, with a large strike and demonstration of tobacco workers drowned in blood. There were a total of twelve dead, including the 25-year-old motorist, Tassos Tousis, at the intersection of Egnatia and Venizelos. The photo that immortalized his mother mourning him alone in the middle of the street was published in the press and was the inspiration for Giannis Ritsos to write his collection The Epitaph.

Labor Day as National Labor Day was established in Greece by Ioannis Metaxas, on April 7, 1937.
