They mobilized, they made it an issue, I congratulate them for that. I give them a big thumbs up and thank them because by raising the issue, all citizens today have been given the opportunity to learn that there is a law that protects animals and is against animal cruelty. The law is strict. They learned that this law is observed and that the Greek Police is here, to find the culprits and bring them to justice.

Arrests and fines

In the Hellenic Police we have established the animal protection department which is very active. In the last 5 months, according to the law, there have been 1489 complaints for which many lawsuits have been filed. Police have made 140 arrests for animal abuse and have imposed 940 fines totaling 1.3m euros.

Those who treat animals with violence also treat people with violence

The job of the Police, however, is to control the implementation of the laws and to control every complaint that is made when the law is not observed. Many say, but an animal bothered. No, its not like that. Animals are souls, we protect them. This is our choice, this is our decision. It is a matter of education, humanity, culture and the interesting thing is that as the statistics prove beyond our logical and moral analysis, usually people who treat animals with violence, treat people with violence as well. It is also associated with cases of domestic violence and so on. Every human being has the right not to have a dog or a kitten in his house, there is no issue but it is the obligation of all of us to be civilized in our attitudes towards animals because that is the characteristic of man. This is how we should be.
