Appeal against the parliament for the deadly fire in Mati

Appeal exercised by Appellate Prosecutor Panagiotis Meidanis against of the Athens Council of Criminal Courtswho evaluated the responsibilities for the deadly fire in Mati which caused untold disaster and 103 dead and dozens of injured.

According to the prosecutor’s proposal, there was absolute invalidity on the order of the Chamber by which the judges of the Council requested the continuation of the inquiries into five executives, then, of the Fire Brigade for category in degree felony.

According to the appellate prosecutor, the absolute invalidity has been caused by the fact that according to the law, in order for investigations to be continued to upgrade the charge, the competent prosecutor must have acted, otherwise the invalidity is absolute.

In terms 13 people, local government agents, among which the former governor Rena Douroumayors of the area, officials of the Civil Protection and others, the appellate prosecutor ruled that judges have committed abuse of power with their decision, as they did not specify and explicitly, whether the 13 are referred to trial, although against them the evidence was absolutely sufficient.

Finally for the part of the parliament about release of 10 other stakeholderspolice and local authorities, the Appellate Prosecutor ruled that for six of them there was sufficient evidence and must be referred.

The proposal of the appellate prosecutor Panagiotis Meidanis will be evaluated by the Board of Appeals which will make the final decision.
