The guilt of the jeweler and the broker accused of the death of Zak Costopoulos on Gladstonos Street in September 2018, was decided by the Mixed Jury Court of Athens.
Magda Fyssa was also present in the courtroom, declaring her solidarity with the Costopoulos family. After a conference of about 3 hours, ordinary judges and jurors ruled by a majority that the two men, a jeweler and a broker, should be convicted of the crime of fatal bodily harm. Two jurors were of the opinion that they should be convicted of the crime of grievous bodily harm. At the same time, the defense’s request for conversion of the charge into intentional homicide was rejected.
Regarding the four police officers who participated in the arrest of the 33-year-old activist shortly before he expired, the court acquitted them of the crime of fatal bodily harm. The decision was taken by a majority (4-3) as the president and two jurors were of the opinion that they should be convicted of the crime of dangerous bodily harm.
Tensions erupted in the courtroom both inside and outside the courtroom. “Shame, disgrace” was heard and the Costopoulos family and Magda Fyssa reacted to the decision. With the president asking to go out otherwise there will be arrests for disorder.
The court is expected to rule on mitigating circumstances and sentences. It is recalled that the prosecutor Sotiris Bougioukos has suggested that the jeweler and the broker be found guilty of the crime of fatal bodily harm together, while for the police he has proposed to be acquitted.
