Ten questions and answers were prepared by the Ministry of Education regarding the PISA exams.
Among other things, the ministry states that the topics include “the basic knowledge that students must have acquired in elementary and high school”, “students do not need any preparation to participate in the exams, they are not graded” and that “they do not have the relationship between the diagnostic tests and the evaluation of the teachers or the educational project “.

1. What is the “Greek PISA”;
These are diagnostic examinations for students of the 6th grade of Elementary and the 3rd grade of High School in the subjects of Modern Greek Language and Mathematics, which aim at the valid and reliable diagnosis of the knowledge, abilities and skills of our students. , according to the expected learning outcomes.
2. When will the exams take place and in how many schools?
The exams will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at the national level. 6,000 students from 600 schools in the country, 300 Primary and 300 High Schools will participate.
3. How were the schools selected?
Schools from all regions of the country take part in the diagnostic tests. The selection was made by a Scientific Committee with stratified sampling. Single-seat-multi-seat Primary and small-medium-large Gymnasiums are included. The aim was for the sample to be representative of all the schools in the country, so that students participating in educational environments with different conditions could participate.
4. Will there be results per school?
No. The answer sheets of the students, apart from being anonymous, contain only the information of the region where each school belongs, that is, when the results are announced, we will know how the students of Attica, Epirus, South Aegean, etc. did.
5. Are diagnostic tests related to teacher evaluation or educational work?
No. Apart from the fact that there will be no data for specific schools or teachers, the test result will only reflect what knowledge they have acquired. No ranking or excellence list will be created.
6. Are students burdened with exam stress?
No. Students do not need any preparation to participate in the exams, they are not graded, they are not judged for admission to the next level, they do not compete with each other who will be the best, they are not going to take a position. Diagnostic tests are not tests of excellence.
7. What do the topics include?
The basic knowledge that students must have acquired in Elementary and High School. The topics are familiar to students, in the style of textbooks and what has been taught over the years. Diagnostic tests do not come as a surprise to students with issues they have never seen before. 8. Who determines the issues?
Teachers will determine them, who were selected by the IEP, after an open invitation, among those who currently teach in schools, so that the topics are directly related to school reality. At the same time, a nine-member Scientific Committee gave clear and detailed instructions for the elaboration of the topics.
9. What is the purpose of these exams?
Their goal is to improve the education system based on specific data. We will find out what the students have learned, what they have understood well from the textbooks and what is it that is difficult for them and how much. With this information it will be possible to make corrective interventions both in matters of teaching methodology and in the Curricula.
10. Have such exams been performed again in Greece or in Europe?
Greece is one of the few EU exceptions that so far does not collect (a) systematically, (b) in an institutionalized framework and (c) at national level data on the quality of education and does not conduct diagnostic tests. Since 2009, the vast majority of Member States have gradually instituted examinations to assess and ensure the quality of the education system: Germany, Italy, France, Austria, Finland, Hungary, Sweden, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, among others. With the institutionalization of the “Greek PISA”, our country will belong to the category of countries that use the results of diagnostic tests in the evaluation of the educational system at national level.
