First in Greece in the number of total awards, emerged as Chalkidiki Prefecture, with 96 flags, followed by the Attica, Crete and Rhodes.
The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (responsible in Greece for the institution) announced today the results, which once again bring Greece to a very high position, in terms of not only the cleanliness of beaches and seas, but also the organization of the coast. More specifically, the Blue Flag awards 581 beaches this year (compared to 545 last year), 15 marinas (compared to 16 last year) and 6 tourist boats (a category added in 2017).
In terms of data per regional unit, at the top is by far Halkidiki, with 87 Blue Flags. Next is the regional unit of Rhodes, which improved its performance (55 this year compared to 49 last year), while the rest of the positions belong to Crete: in the regional units of Lassithi (41 this year compared to 40 last year), Chania (36 against 33), Heraklion (31 against 29) and Rethymnon (20 vs. 18). The top ten is completed by Attica (18 vs. 15), the regional unit of Kefallinia (17 vs. 16) and Lesvos (17). The regional units with the fewest blue flags (only one in each) are the P.E. Andros, Evros, Ithaca, Mykonos and Tinos.
At the municipal level, Rhodes is declared champion again this year with 55 flags. The following are the municipalities of Kassandra, Halkidiki (32), Agios Nikolaos, Lassithi (25), Nea Propontida, Halkidiki (19), Sithonia and Halkidiki (from 18). At the level of islands, after Rhodes follow Chios (15), the municipality of Argostoli Kefallinia (13) and Kos (12).
It is reminded that the Blue Flag is awarded to coasts that meet a set of 33 conditions (38 for marinas and 51 for tourist boats), while it can be removed during the year if it turns out that they no longer meet them. The Founder and International Coordinator of the Blue Flag Program is the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), based in Denmark, with members from 73 countries from all continents.
He is represented in Greece by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (EEPF), the oldest national environmental organization of the country (1951), which completes this year, 70 years of uninterrupted action in environmental interventions, in nature protection programs. The program is also supported by the Ministry of Environment.
