The island of Samos will have more seasonal firefighters this year during the firefighting period, as stated by the Chief of the Fire Brigade, Lieutenant General Alexios Rapanos, who accompanies the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidis in the area, Rose.
The island has a total of 100 permanent firefighters and 100 seasonal firefighters, but this year another 13 will be added to the seasonal firefighters.
The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidis, together with the Secretary General of Civil Protection, Vassilios Papageorgiou and the head of the PS, Lieutenant General Alexios Rapanos, conducted an autopsy on the island today, while they were in Heraion of Samos to visit done so far in order to strengthen fire protection.
Mr. Stylianidis during his visit to Samos, stressed that this is an island very vulnerable to forest fires, but added that they aim, based on the new doctrine of the ministry, with immediate interventions and more prevention to reduce the effects of forest fires. “We are shaping a new doctrine to address the challenges of the climate crisis by focusing on prevention, preparedness and immediate intervention. We are ready to deal with, mitigate and reduce the effects if there is a fire on the island. “I saw passion, determination and perseverance in the goal, so that all together as a family we can face the problem whenever it arises”, said Mr. Stylianidis characteristically.
For his part, the head of the PS, lieutenant general, Alexios Rapanos referred to the reinforcement of seasonal firefighters on the island, as another 13 are added to the 100 seasonal firefighters, while the permanent firefighters are 100 and pointed out that this year there will be 2 helicopters on the island.
He said that on June 2, an Augusta Bell helicopter will arrive on the island, which will be able to transport firefighters for immediate intervention in the incidents, while it will be able to transport 3 tons of water and added that the second helicopter, a medium type , Mi-8 tanker with bucket, is scheduled to arrive in Samos in the second ten days of June. “We are here, we know the problems and we support both our firefighters and the local work,” said Mr. Rapanos.
Mr. Stylianidis then held a meeting in the municipality of Western Samos (Karlovasi) and a visit to the fire department of Karlovasi. He then visited the Samos fire service and then took part in a meeting in the municipality of Eastern Samos. “Firefighters here are ready to deal with anything that happens during the fire season. We will be by their side, helpers by air and whatever else is needed “, noted Mr. Stylianidis. Shortly afterwards, Mr. Stylianidis attended the handover ceremony of two fire trucks to volunteer firefighters in the municipality of East Samos from a twinned municipality in Germany.
The minister went to Kos in the afternoon where he continues his tour and visited the Fire Service of the island. As Mr. Stylianidis pointed out, the meetings that take place on these three islands are aimed at improving all the institutions in the context of the fire-fighting period.
The Minister stressed that this year the air means are being strengthened, while they will try to help a lot in the prevention, but also in the preparation / readiness. “The doctrine has changed and we are moving more towards prevention than repression, you realize that these do not happen overnight. It takes time. We have moved on to more scientific documentation of both our analyzes and data to be more effective in the field, but fires are not extinguished, neither by air, nor by precautionary measures. You erase them, you are the heroes on the field, the recognition and appreciation of the society must be towards your faces “, noted Mr. Stylianidis and added that the society, the citizens, need to be allies in three directions . “We want every citizen an ally, firstly so that fires are not caused by human negligence, as 95% of fires are due to human negligence, secondly to have the citizen next to us for information instead of an observer, and thirdly in case we need to do “Organized evacuations of the population to have the discipline needed to avoid loss of human lives, either by fire or by any other reason”, concluded Mr. Stylianidis.
It is noted that Mr. Stylianidis will be in Kos until tomorrow at noon, holding a meeting with the island’s bodies. He will then leave to go to Rhodes, where he will stay until Sunday, May 22.
