In the shallow sandy waters in the sea area “Paliomanas” of the gulf of Thessaloniki, the tanker “ECOMATE” of the Maltese flag ran aground yesterday at noon with twelve local crew members, in good health.
Specifically, “ECOMATE” was located immobilized in the ship monitoring system (AIS), while after repeated attempts to communicate with the master, there was no response. Then, a patrol boat of the Greek Navy went to the area, noticing the sinking of the tanker.
The local emergency plan was immediately activated and at this point an anti-pollution boat, a private diver and a tug rushed, with the help of which the tanker detached and sailed by itself into the berth of the port of Thessaloniki.
The above ship had sailed loaded from the port of Thessaloniki to the port of Aspropyrgos, while the incident did not cause any injuries, there was no inflow of water and no marine pollution was observed.
The master of “ECOMATE” was arrested by the Central Port Authority of Thessaloniki, which is conducting the preliminary investigation, the prescribed administrative sanctions were imposed and the ship was prohibited from sailing until the presentation of a class maintenance certificate by the classification society that monitors it.
