by

Ratification of agreements with Northern Macedonia will come to Parliament, when the national interest and the program of the Parliament allow it, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias answering today in Parliament a topical question of the PASOK MP, George Kaminis.

“I will answer you clearly and in one sentence. They will come, when the national interest and the program of the Parliament allow it. I understand, there is a delay. You notice it correctly. You rightly referred to the times, you rightly referred to the fact that there is also a national interest. “On the other hand, there is the broader view of the national interest, which every government has the right to do and, in this sense, I repeat that, when it judges, they will come to a vote,” said Mr. Dendias.

He noted that both PASOK and New Democracy have specific reservations on specific articles, formulations and issues of the Prespa Agreement. However, he added, once the Agreement is ratified, New Democracy will abide by it: “The Greek government does not have the ability to have a review policy towards Agreements, which the country itself has signed, regardless of governments.”

Answering the question whether the country is happy with the implementation of the Prespa Agreement, the Foreign Minister said: “There are issues regarding textbooks, brands, names. There are also issues regarding the withdrawal of the attempt of Northern Macedonia then to appear as the successor figure of the Empire of Alexander the Great, what is called Sahaism. “There are still problems with that.”

However, Mr. Dendias noted that despite the fact that the ratification of the contractual text has not been done by the Greek Parliament, the Greek Air Force has been doing air policing for a sufficient period of time.

Also, Mr. Dendias added, Greece provides all the assistance it can offer, to Northern Macedonia, as well as to Albania, in order to facilitate their accession process, of course with the well-known conditionality always in the case of both countries.

The Foreign Minister noted that stability, friendly relations, as well as the European course of Northern Macedonia are in the interest of Greece, noting that this is recognized by the “vast majority of colleagues, regardless of past”.

“Greece is a country that has an absolute interest in having stability in the Balkans. It has an absolute interest in preventing revisions in the Balkans. It has an absolute interest in preventing border changes in the Balkans. “He has every reason, both valuable and closely related to the national interest, to promote the idea of multicultural societies in the Balkans,” concluded Mr. Dendias.
