German Foreign Minister v. Turkey: Turkish Violations and Aggressive Rhetoric Towards Greece Concerned

by

Asked about this, the German Foreign Ministry spokesman said that Turkish statements do not help dialogue and stability in the region.

The statements of the Turkish side lately “do not help the constructive dialogue and stability in the region”, while “especially the aggressive rhetoric, as well as the Turkish violation of the Greek airspace, give cause for concern”, said a spokesman of the German Foreign Ministry.

Responding to a question from APE-MPE regarding the meeting held yesterday in Berlin between officials of Germany, France, the USA, Britain and Turkey and the announcement of the Turkish presidency on the issue, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Christian Wagner stated :

“At the outset, I can say that we are aware of the statements made in recent days and weeks and that they do not help the constructive dialogue and stability in the region. “Especially the aggressive rhetoric, as well as the Turkish violation of Greek airspace, give cause for concern.” He added that “the federal government is working hard with partners for dialogue and de-escalation in the eastern Mediterranean” and quoted Foreign Minister Analena Berbock as saying before leaving for Pakistan, Athens and Athens.

Answering a question about the “German position on the militarization of the Greek islands”, Mr. Wagner repeated an excerpt from the same statement of Mrs. Berbok: “Greece plays an important role when it comes to the security of the Mediterranean region. At a time when Europe’s security order is fundamentally challenged by President Putin, we must stand united as NATO allies and European partners. “Problems must be solved through discussion and not through escalation of tensions.”
