The Minister of Energy explained that 70% of the natural gas imported by our country is used to produce electricity, therefore, it would cause problems for households and businesses.
“Greece, like several European countries, is opposed to the Commission’s proposal for a mandatory 15% reduction in natural gas consumption, if the supply from Russia is eventually cut off,” the Environment Minister said on SKAI 100.3 on Thursday and Energy Kostas Skrekas.
The Minister of Energy explained that 70% of the natural gas imported by our country is used to produce electricity, therefore, it would cause problems for households and businesses.
In addition, he said that such a reduction is not going to contribute to the strengthening of the northern countries, such as Germany and Austria, which have the biggest problem.
Mr. Skrekas clarified that Greece has already expressed its disagreement with the proposal of the European Commission, while it has also taken all the necessary actions to ensure adequacy.
He added that the issue will be discussed and a decision will be taken on July 26 at the EU Council of Ministers.
Greece’s opposition to the Commission’s proposal for a 15% reduction in natural gas consumption was also expressed by the government representative Giannis Oikonomou.
“The government does not agree in principle with the Commission’s proposal for a 15% reduction in natural gas consumption,” he said comparatively during the briefing for political editors. As he said, “we have submitted proposals and we continue to support that this direction can provide solutions”.
