Arrows from Koumoundourou and the Charilaou Trikoupi are constantly receiving at Herod Atticus. The two opposition parties are competing for who will have the initiative of the movements and August is expected to be hot politically. THE Prime Minister through yesterday’s message he made it clear that he does not want any shadow to remain on the issue of monitoring and with his actions he showed that he is open to the initiatives of SYRIZA and PASOK. He said yes to the recommendation Commission of Inquiryhe is positive about proposals to modernize the parliament that will ensure transparency in the action of the secret services, while he agreed to open the Parliament earlier.

Between August 22-26 is expected to take place on before daily discussion on the subject of follow-ups following his request and letter Alexis Tsipras to Kostas Tassoulas. A process that will concern him Nikos Androulakis, for the legal monitoring of his mobile phone by the EYP, but with him absent, since he is not a member of the Parliament. This is one of the reasons, after all, that PASOK insists that the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry is the only means that can shed light on the case and possibly bring new evidence to the surface. In Harilaou Trikoupi they know that the debate in the Parliament will develop into a confrontation between the government and official opposition.

A game for three is underway with Maximou waiting for the opposition to position themselves next term in relation to bundle of sentences which the prime minister testified. They are about strengthening it accountability of the EYP and Parliament’s oversight through the Institutions and Transparency Committee. In the upgrading of the role of the National Security Council for the better utilization of information and the EYP at the same time as shielding the framework of legal connections for political figures. In addition, according to the prime minister, changes are underway within the National Intelligence Service to strengthen internal control, transparency, openness and training of its human resources. Regarding the government’s intervention launched through PNP, executives with knowledge of its content, said that it will add again to the institutional arsenal the security filter with which the EYP’s requests will be approved by an appeals prosecutor, in addition to the EYP’s prosecutor. This is a valve, which, as the same executives emphasized, was abolished by SYRIZA in 2018.

The government insists that despite the fact that everything was done legally the National Intelligence Service underestimated the political dimension of tapping the phone of a parliamentary party leader. The political “tails” that this case leaves, however, are expected to be numerous in the coming period. The establishment of the Commission of Inquiry is expected to create a front of the opposition parties against Maximos. In the government camp, however, they argue that the legal procedures that have been followed will disarm the arguments of the other parliamentary forces and therefore the “coalition” that will be created will not continue. In SYRIZA, they believe that for PASOK there is only one way to move away from the “embrace” of the ND, leaving the blue party without a potential ally after the second elections. The discussion on early elections is limited to the requests of Koumoundourou who persistently requests, for communication reasons according to government officials, the resignation of the prime minister.

It is a fact that at the moment the rift between Maximos and Harilaos Trikoupis is large. It was also seen from yesterday’s announcements between him Yannis Economou and Nikos Androulakis regarding the information that the government wants to give to the president of PASOK. The head of Harilaou Trikoupis requests that the reason for his monitoring by the EYP be announced immediately and maintains a very tough attitude towards the prime minister. “I will not accept any cover-up. I will not allow Mr. Mitsotakis to trivialize a key case for the separation of powers in our country”, he said characteristically. “Mr. Androulakis can always address and receive answers, in the proper institutional manner, from the competent authorities. He persistently refuses this option as well”, the government spokesman commented. As far as SYRIZA is concerned, they may watch with smiles the confrontation between the two former gladiators of power, however there has been no indication from PASOK that they have decided to stop the confrontation. They are waiting for the first opportunity that will be given to them to show to Koumoundourou that their alliance is momentary and the autonomous course of the movement will continue.

Without asterisks, however, PASOK appears united in this case. For “unfortunate and unacceptable attempt by the prime minister to hide behind national security issues to justify surveillance” spoke in his statement o George Papandreou. Evangelos Venizelos also intervened in the political conflict before the written statement of Nikos Androulakis after the Prime Minister’s speech. The former deputy prime minister spoke of a “large-scale error”. Before the statement of Mr. Mitsotakis o George Katrougalos who is vice-chairman of the Parliament’s Institutions and Transparency Committee, speaking to ERT, had stated: “there is no legal monitoring of a political leader or even an executive, member of parliament of a party. This monitoring was not even legal, because there may be acceptance by the competent prosecutor of the EYP’s request, but it was never communicated, as the law governing the ADAE expressly provides, to the ADAE itself”.

It is clear that the official opposition is determined to escalate the attack on the government day by day on the issue of surveillance. Even for the opening of Parliament, they clarified that Mr. Tsipras’ request was for the immediate holding of a debate, adding that “Mr. Mitsotakis finally set the debate for the week after August 22, apparently to gain time and try to neutralize the “bomb” with his propaganda apparatus”. ND responded late last night that “SYRIZA considers that the opening of the Parliament should be accelerated even more. Fortunately, it did not ask for the meeting to be held on August 14, as was done in his days. The date when the Parliament was voting on the 3rd unnecessary memorandum which he brought. But fortunately we will not experience such times again”.
