SYRIZA president blames the prime minister for the “surveillance scandal” – Progressive Alliance
The president of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance, Alexis Tsipras, places sole responsibility for the “surveillance scandal” on the prime minister, in an article in the “Newspaper of the Editors”.
Mr. Tsipras’ article in detail:
The revelations to date about the “legal” and illegal surveillance of politicians and journalists represent a grave insult to the Constitution and leave a deep wound in the democratic functioning of the State. And solely responsible for this diversion is, without a doubt, Mr. Mitsotakis himself. Not only because as Prime Minister he has the objective responsibility, but also because he hastened from the first day of his administration to assume by law, himself, the responsibility of EYP.
His televised apology for the shocking scandal proves that he remains indifferent to truth, morality and respect for the rule of law. At the moment when reputable international media compares his regime with that of the colonels, the prime minister, in a display of political and personal cowardice, attempts to save himself by transferring his responsibilities to the “Junta of Maximos”, which he himself chose and supported. And the defiant public lies of the closest associates of the ministers, such as Mr. Oikonomou, Mr. Gerapetritis and Mr. Pierrakakis, from the day of the first complaint of the journalist Th. Koukakis until the disclosure of the official connection by the EYP to mobile phone of Mr. Androulakis, leave no doubt about the intentions but also the guilt, both of themselves and of their political superior.
The unanswered questions, however, are so many and so critical that the more Mr. Mitsotakis avoids answering them, the more everyone’s suspicions grow that what we know so far is only the tip of the iceberg. The suspicions, that is, that Mr. Mitsotakis is not just a dangerously “careless” prime minister, but the head of a dark group that operated as a criminal organization, violating the Constitution and every democratic value. Because, apparently, the journalist Thanasis Koukakis was not put under surveillance for reasons of national danger, but because he dared to engage, investigate and write about Mitsotakis’ legislative initiative to amend the criminal codes, under the pretext of a stricter treatment of Molotov cocktails, but in reality in order to give immunity to high-ranking bank executives, who were facing serious charges for open criminal cases of offshore loans. And Mr. Androulakis apparently was not put under surveillance because he had contacts with Chinese dragons, Armenian or Ukrainian Azov fighters, but because the criminal organization intended to put him under “surveillance” and if the possibility arose under constant political blackmail.
With these as facts it is obvious that this case cannot and will not end without further explanations and revelations. And in any case, no media superweapon and no systemic support will be able to balance the loss of support and the spiral in which Mr. Mitsotakis is and will be until the end.
He certainly has one last political chance to leave with some dignity. Choosing the path of assuming political responsibility, resignation and recourse to the judgment of the Greek people. If he doesn’t, he may fantasize that he’s still in flight, but in fact he’s in free fall. Which in the end will inevitably have the impact.
In any case, however, the crucial thing is not what Mr. Mitsotakis will do, but what the next day will be for the country. How we perceive it and how we will prepare it. Because here we are, it is not enough to seek a simple change in power. What is required is a plan for the withdrawal and reorganization of the 3rd Hellenic Republic. An institutional restart plan, which will concern not only the EYP, but also the Judiciary, the operation of the media, independent authorities and control mechanisms. Against the black darkness of authoritarian regime and the private state – family loot, let us contrast serious and courageous reforms that will ensure more democracy, transparency, accountability, justice and meritocracy.
The democratic and progressive world, the democratic faction, must face with determination, prudence and unyielding democratic militancy this bet of national importance. Because the existing differences cannot hide the common goal: The defense of Democracy, the rule of law, the rights and security of the citizen.
And a government of democratic normality, change, and progress, is the only answer to the diversion, parastatal methods and institutional viciousness that the three-year Mitsotakis administration has led us to.
