The foreign minister said that Greece will use the Oceans Conference, which it will organize in 2024, as an opportunity to ask countries in the wider region to make efforts to respect the rules for protecting the marine environment.

It is essential that all countries in our neighborhood ratify the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the UNCLOSon the occasion of the organization from Greece Ocean Conference in 2024noted the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Dendias, in his opening statement during the meeting with the US President’s Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry.

“When the conference was held in Chile, Chile ratified it,” the foreign minister recalled. “So can we call on all our neighbors to ratify it? We should and can protect the marine environment.” He added that Greece will use the Conference as an opportunity to ask the countries in the wider region to make efforts to respect the rules for the protection of the marine environment.

As Mr. Dendias pointed out, “the relations between Greece and the USA are at the highest level” and “your proposal to host the “2024 Our Ocean Conference”, which we gladly accepted, is a special honor for Greece”. “According to Greek mythology, Oceanus was a Titan, son of Heaven and Earth. And because of this tradition, we believe that most things come from the ocean,” he said.

“In ancient Greek, ‘ocean’ meant ‘sea’, it did not have the exact meaning of today’s ocean. So everything comes from the sea and that’s why we have to protect it.”

During the meeting with Mr. Kerry, they had a fruitful discussion on strengthening Greece-US cooperation on climate and marine environment protection, Greece’s hosting of the International Conference “Our Ocean Conference” in 2024 and the wider developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, according to a relevant post by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Twitter.

In recognition of the support of the ancestor of Th. Lindall Winthrop in the Greek revolution and as a sign of the long-term Greek-American friendship, Mr. Dendias offered the US President’s special climate envoy a copy of a letter from Ioannis Kapodistrias.

The letter of the first governor of Greece, written in 1828, was addressed to the Philhellenic Society of New York and expressed the gratitude of the Greek people for the humanitarian aid provided by the US, the minister said.
