Dendias: Turkey must abandon casus Belli – We are pursuing a multidimensional foreign policy

by

“We live in an ever-changing environment, pursuing an extroverted policy of principles based on international law and international legitimacy. Our compass over time is to defend our sovereignty and rights. “The defense of our national interest and universal values” said Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias during the full briefing of the Committee on National Defense and Foreign Affairs, noting that “we do not have the luxury of sham disputes because the situation is always critical” .

The Foreign Minister, during the open session of the Commission, referred to the Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue, emphasizing that “the country’s foreign policy does not move in opposition to Turkey and what it does and says”. We have, he said, “an autonomous and autonomous foreign policy designed on the basis of the national interest.”

He made it clear that “Greece and the current government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis always remain open to dialogue with Turkey, but in the context of international law for the only difference we have with the neighboring country.”

He sent the message to Ankara that “a self-evident condition for the success of a dialogue is to abandon the threat of war against Greece, the casus belli, and to accept the framework of international law.” The casus belli “is a huge issue,” the minister said, noting that Turkey is “the only country on the planet that, in complete violation of the United Nations Charter, threatens a neighboring country with war and even with its legal right.” This threat, said Mr. Dendias, “should go away. It is not possible in the 21st century to accept the threat of war as a logic of coexistence. “Turkey should realize that this will also be in its own interest, to lift the casus belli.”

He pointed out that “the Turkish government must prove at some point that what it declares to its various interlocutors, that it believes in and endorses a dialogue in the framework of international law, which is not pretentious or based on generalities.”

Regarding the Cyprus issue, the Foreign Minister stated that provocative and illegal actions should be abandoned, both in the besieged city of Famagusta – in violation of UN resolutions – and in the Cypriot EEZ, and that the dialogue should be resumed in the only acceptable context. that of the decisions of the UN Security Council, ie the bi-zonal and bi-communal federation.

Regarding the Balkans, Mr. Dendias referred to “our firm and continuous participation in the Balkans with emphasis on the accession process of the Western Balkans, especially Albania and Northern Macedonia”, noting the “concerns raised by the situation in Bosnia “Herzegovina” and underlined that “the European perspective of any country means observance of conditionality”.

During the discussion, the Foreign Minister raised the role of our country “in the new security architecture formed in the Eastern Mediterranean, the further strengthening of our relations with important countries in the wider region such as Egypt, Israel, the UAE, Saudi Arabia but and a new network of bilateral contacts and multilateral cooperation schemes with other states such as Bahrain and Oman. ” He also referred to important agreements that form the framework of our foreign policy with countries, such as France, the United States, the United Kingdom, for the post-Brexit era. Also in our presence in the Middle East, Libya, Syria, in the interest of our country for what is happening in the Caucasus, but also in areas that until today were not of direct Greek interest. He informed that immediately after Christmas he will visit Nigeria and Angola, we will have the visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kenya, the Greek embassy in Senegal will be inaugurated and possibly later he will also visit Mauritania.

The Foreign Minister stated that our country’s top candidacy for the United Nations Security Council is developing very positively, as he said “so far we have gathered 95 commitments and we are very close to the absolute majority. At the same time, our opponent has not appeared, there are two candidates, us and Denmark for the two positions and there is no claim from a third country “.

The Minister stated that the recent election of our country to the UNESCO World Heritage Council was also very important.

The briefing of the Committee on National Defense and Foreign Affairs by Mr. N. Dendias on foreign policy issues continues behind closed doors.
